Even with Pikachu Red deserves S in my opinion. The 3 starters w/ Snorlax with any two random Pokémon would be enough for an A in my book. Pikachu gets some extra levels, and a lightball in gen 4, so that it can keep up with the rest of the pack just fine. And Espeon/Pikachu round out Red’s type coverage nicely. Especially Espeon when Snorlax is such a freakin tank to anything but fighting.

Most importantly, this fight is ICONIC. And that’s what pokemon is really all about. GSC fuses two regions together all to build up to one final moment: Red, and he lives up to his important final boss status

Red was THE Trainer that NO ONE beat their first go around. Canon ending is you lose to the strongest trainer and every "rematch" doesn't exist in the original timeline. He's top of the charts, no doubt.

Reds team is basically the optional team you can end up with in pokemon yellow (yes thats ment to mirror the anime for ash) but given one of the names you can choose for your character presets is red
The only exception being espion as that wasn't available in gen 1 games so its likely it would be 1 of the original eeveeloutions

In competitive gen 2, snorlax is the King of GSC. The fact he had one in his team back then was enough to strike fear into any player at the time.
