Whether you're seventeen, eighteen, or nineteen doesn't matter that much. I met fifteen-year-olds that were more mature than some people in their thirties.

In addition, someone who joins the military at a young age usually has an idea of what he wants to do with his life, at least for the next few years. The undecided, on the other hand, stay in school or college a bit longer or just do what their parents or friends are suggesting them to do.

A young volunteer for the army also needs to have a bit of dedication. There will be his parents, teachers, and friends who will try to talk him out of his plans, especially in wartimes.

For young people, the military is an adventure. There are things in life, you better do when you're still a bit naive and haven't thought too much about the consequences. War is one of those things.

Anyway, after a few weeks in combat, you’ll probably have matured more than during your last five years in high school.

For us, the age of a soldier was never a topic of discussion on the frontlines. With one exception: we sometimes made fun of the old guys, the “grandpas”, the ones that were over thirty.

Therefore, a little piece of advice: join the army when you’re young.
