MSI GF72VR 7RF Gaming Laptop Review and Benchmarks

The GF72VR 7RF gaming laptop from MSI that’s a little different than other MSI laptops. Along with its grey interior it’s got an Nvidia 1060 graphics card and Intel 7700HQ CPU, so we’ll see how these perform in the gaming benchmarks component of the review. I’ll take you through the features of the laptop, what I liked and didn’t, discuss the thermals, battery life, heat, and how loud the laptop gets.

MSI sent me this laptop for a few weeks to review, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Hello Jarrod... I thought I'd chime back in after watching this very good and detailed review back in January 2018 when you published it. I had so over researched my options I stopped looking for a couple of weeks then I watched this review. I purchased the laptop in early March of 2018. It's been the best laptop I've ever owned. I didn't purchase it for gaming though, I needed the best combo of hardware at the best price point I could find to do video and audio. It's been my go to workhorse for almost 2 1/2 years now and I still find it super responsive and totally reliable.

It's been 2 years since I requested on your channel to review this laptop. This laptop performs great for a casual gamer, like me. I don't have any problems encountered using this. The only thing I did is repaste it and tweak some programs to make it powerful for gaming, photo editing, and video editing.

I've had one for a few years.

The battery isn't great, has never been, it doesn't last all that long and for some reason, if you leave it sit for a couple of weeks, the battery always seems to be flat when wanting to use it again. But it held up pretty well, not loosing all that much capacity over 5 years.

I opened it today to see if i could replace it. And found out a big empty optical drive bay... I wish I'd known. It looks like there is an ic missing on the motherboard next to the optical drive missing connector. But maybe it is upgradable.

It'd be nice as, 5 years later, it's still a really good laptop to do 3D CAD and image editing.

I got the laptop 3 days ago (256 SSD +1TB), I play overwatch on Ultra settings(Max), very smooth, laptop temperature is fine.
On league of legends, the fps goes up to 145 on max settings, so I specified the max fps as 120 👌
Will test it on other highend games soon.
I use external mechanical keyboard, so I don't feel the keyboard when it gets hot. I also use MSI noise cancelation headsets.
I think the speakers are not load enough for gaming.

Nice review, man. I have the same laptop but I'm enjoying the 120hz screen paired with gtx 1060 coz I'm just playing csgo, pubg, and overwatch (also playing nba 2k hehe). Good review, atleast I have insights on my nee daily driver.

Good stuff man! I have a question if you dont mind me asking. I have the MSI Apache pro with a GTX 1060 but it only has 3GB of GDDR5 memory and was wondering if its even worth returning this for the one with 6GB of video memory for another $100.00

hey, i bought this laptop 2 years ago and as i play newer games (2020) i think i see some bottlenecking in my cpu and gpu. when i play any new game my cpu usage bumps up to 100% but my gpu usage is 10% and that proccures high temperature (up to 90 degrees) so i think the cpu i7 7700hq (overclocked) is bad for the gtx 1060. so can u help me fix the bottlenecking or try to do somthing about the cpu ?
