AP Physics 1 Free Response Solution And Tips (Block & Pulley)

This free response from the AP Physics one exam looks at a two block pulley system where one block is resting on a table. We look at difference scenarios changing the mass of the blocks and the mass of the pulley. We will need to explain how changing the masses affects the acceleration of the system and the tension in the rope.

For part (e) is another plausible reason for a1>a2 is because for the second scenario the pulley has a rotational inertia when for the first scenario the pulley has no rotational inertia due to no mass.

I have a question about part b: you said the friction forces were still there, although negligible. So in this case, shouldn’t we draw the friction force for block a?

So if We are considering a system we use f = ma formula to apply as a netforce then we divide the system and make them use separate f = ma for each block so like f = ma formula for block A and f = ma formula to block b and then compare them
