According to the OCR A textbook: 'in cis-trans isomers, one of the attached groups on each carbon atom of the double bond MUST be a Hydrogen.'

Thank you this was really helpful, I have a test question on drawing pent-1-ene cis and trans isomers but im not quite sure how you would draw it out as the double bond is on the first carbon?

Do both groups on either side need to be identical for cis-trans isomerism or only one like at 2.29 ?

I have question, what if the same groups are on the right hand side, i.e you can draw a vertical line from one to the other

hi sir, I just wanted to ask how do you know when to use cis/trans or e/z isomerism. Is it normally stated in the question?

I thought the cis-trans was about the H and if it was on one side its cis, different- trans?

How is cis-trans isomerism possible if there's no hydrogen attached to each carbon of the C=C bond?
