I don’t get how people comfortably assume the sound of someone entering their home is their relative who went out so they don’t bother to ascertain it’s really them till it’s too late.

The other morning my husband had left for the gym at about 6am. It was just me and my one year old and he woke up at 6:30am so I brought him in my room to have a bottle and he fell back asleep in my bed. So I was drifting off when I heard my bedroom door shift slightly open. (We live in a 100+ year old house and it’s the last original door so it takes A LOT of force to open and doesn’t hinge so you just have to shoulder your way in). I was nervous trying to figure out what it was but nothing happened for a bit. I then started hearing footsteps right outside our door and thought I heard some kind of weird moaning and the door shoved open a little more. I texted my husband to see if he let the dog out this morning as she sleeps in a kennel at night and he said no. Then I grabbed our firearm, called my mom since they live just down the street and were heading to work, so my step dad ran over to check it out. Turns out our dog is an escape artist and somehow figured out how to get out of her kennel and was pushing up against our door. 🙃 just glad I wasn’t going to have to fight someone off with shaky hands

It floors me that some children grow up so secure that they feel completely safe letting a complete stranger into their home when they are alone. I couldn't even imagine.
