I agree, the original movie was a masterpiece. But I'm also excited to get the musical on film, so it can be just as timeless. That's the biggest heartbreak of theater... once a show is done, it's over. That show, with those people, will never happen again. At least we can preserve this. And Fantasia was one of the best Celie’s.

I’m Gen X and I went to the movies with my mom to see the original twice. This adaptation will appeal to the Millennials and Gen Z. I’m all in. Can’t wait to see it.

To everyone here, The Color Purple was adapted into a musical in the early 200s where it was nominated for numerous Tonys and took home Best Lead Actress by LaChanze. It was them revived in 2015 and again nominated for numerous Tonys as well as won for Best Rival and again for Best Lead Actress by Cynthia Erivo. This is just another wonderful medium to tell this wonderful story.

I understand that this was originally a musical that won awards but sometimes Hollywood does not need to keep remaking classics over and over. The original was and always will be a timeless classic for many generations.

To all the one’s saying this is unnecessary, a lot of people don’t have access to broadway shows or to see touring productions due to high ticket prices. I appreciate this adaption, because it gives those who didn’t get the chance to see the broadway or touring musical the chance to experience the show in a sense.

For some, they will say" Why a Remake" the first flim was perfect.
I agree, the first film was perfect.
But there is now a new generation of black actors who will bring new life and Talent and a new chapter to this classic story.
It will not be the original, but it will be it good and truly worth seeing.

1. This is not a remake. It's a film version of the musical.
2. The 1st film, although a masterpiece, strayed from the SOURCE material, the book by Alice Walker.
3. The musical is based off the BOOK, not the 1985 film.

I really enjoyed the original movie and the book. I was initially hesitant about it being remade but the cast is so great and it's a musical so it's a different thing. I hope it's amazing and will tear my heart apart

Interesting so many people in the comments section are lamenting we don't need another remake. This version of the book is based on the Broadway musical and has an entirely different feel than the 1985 movie. I say give it a chance, but if you are vehemently opposed, don't beat the movie down before it's had a chance. Our culture doesn't get these cinema opportunities very often.

It's a musical now that makes sense....I was nervous until I realized it's a musical...now I cannot wait to see this version....
