Israel just eliminated two of the highest ranking leaders of Hamas and Hezbollah just a few hours apart in a shocking move. The political leader of Hamas Ismail Haniyeh was killed in a predawn air-strike that took place in the capital of Iran. The fact that this strike was conducted deep into Iranian soil means it’s unlike any attack we’ve seen and is a major escalation of the conflict. Let’s break down what this means for the Middle East, the tactics involved, and how Iran might respond.

This raises questions about Iran’s air defense capabilities. Israel would have used their F-35 stealth fighter to evade their defensive systems. The distance from Israel to Tehran round trip is about 1800 miles or 3,000 km. But the F-35’s Max distance is relatively short at 1,300 miles. This means Israel would have needed to conduct a mid air refueling operation but that exposes slow flying refuelers near hostile air space .That’s why they could have chosen to deploy a new developed external fuel tank to extend their range. What strikes me about the attack right off the bat is its level of precision. The missile reportedly hit the exact room he was staying in the revolutionary guards guest house.
