The Conjuring: The History of Bathsheba Sherman

Many spirits haunt the Rhode Island farmhouse known as The Old Arnold Estate, but THIS witch's ghost was more spiteful than any other.

Bathsheba the Witch, formerly known as Bathsheba Sherman, was the horrific specter that haunted the farmhouse that belonged to the Perron family in The Conjuring. Although Bathsheba is the main antagonist of the story, many viewers are not aware of her colorful history, or the meaning behind many of the paranormal events seen in the movie.

Unlike Valak in The Conjuring 2, Bathsheba is based off of a real person, who was rumored to be involved in witchcraft in the 1800s. In this video, I'll be using the history of the real Bathsheba Sherman to fill in the blanks about the movie character Bathsheba. I'll also be analyzing her entire story, including the possible origin of her name and how she made a mockery of religious ideas as part of her Satanic agenda.

Finally, I'll look at how she might influenced certain events later in the Conjurverse continuity like what she might have been up to after The Conjuring.

That scene where she’s on top of the wardrobe haunts me to this day lol. I’ll never forget experiencing it in theaters

Imagine being just a misunderstood person, a bit of an outsider and 100+ years later people drag your name through the mud and make you a villian alongside demons.

I want to see a movie about her while she was alive. That would be just so sickeningly good.

"in the end it was her love for family" Dominic Toretto would be proud

I believe Bathsheba is the scariest 'monster' from these movies, purely because she was a real woman.

She is definitely my favourite villain in the conjuring universe, mainly because she just scares the absolute fuck out of me, not many of the other villain's do that to me, or atleast not as much as bathsheba does.

"She awakens with bruises after breaking in the new house with her husband... If you know what I mean."

I love this guy, his humor and how well researched his videos are, really reminds me of Dead Meat.

i feel so bad for the irl bathsheba, she was probably a highly misunderstood woman who was seen as a weird/awkward outsider among her community that somehow got demonized and villanized a 100 years later :(

I really like how this channel goes in-depth explaining every last relevant established detail while also adding fan and personal theories to the mix. Nothing else to add, just excellent content and great work as usual CZ!

Bathseba must have loved Taylor Swift:
She’s got all her victims saying “look what you made me do”😅

Bathsheba's name means daughter of the covenant in Hebrew. Bath means daughter. Another way to remember this is that Jewish people have bar mitzvahs for their sons and bat mitzvahs for their daughters to celebrate their respective becoming men and women in their society.

Any woman named Bathsheba was supposed to be a promised daughter in the eyes of God. This would make any victory that the devil had over her soul that much more "great". I mean "great" as in large or immense. I use it in a pejorative sense.

Bathsheba was the name of the woman who was blamed for King David's downfall. David, the same who slayed Goliath and became king after Saul, saw Bathsheba bathe naked while he was on the rooftop. He lusted after her, called her in and despite her being married to another man, David and Bathsheba slept together several times.

Bathsheba told David she was pregnant with his child. David wanted to cover his sin, so, he told Uriah (Bathsheba's husband who was a commander in David's army) to go home from the war and fuck his own wife. Uriah refused because he felt it was better for him to fight the war to protect Israel. David became annoyed by Uriah so he arranged for the soldiers to go with Uriah into battle and then withdraw their support so that Uriah would inevitably be killed by their enemies.

Long story short, Bathsheba becomes another one of David's wives. She has the baby, but it dies and David is punished by God and is chastized by Nathan, the prophet. David's family would later be cursed where so many terrible things would happen. His son would develop incestuous feelings towards his sister and would rape David's daughter. His other son would kill the rapist son. It was just a horrible, horrible mess. David would lose his political power and his family and kingdom were torn asunder.

So, Bathsheba became a name for a woman of covenant or promise to God but then commit a devastating sin.

God punished David by killing the baby of Bathsheba and David. So, in the movie, a witch binding herself to Satan by killing children seems significant to point out. In Christian/Jewish traditions, a woman's greatest role is being a co-creator and bringing children to this world and so to do the reverse would be one of the worst sins to make.

The clap in Conjuring 1 is the most horrifying jumpscare in the series, because of it’s simplicity in form.

Bathsheba was the most terrifying entity in the Conjuring universe in my opinion. The real Bathsheba Sherman haunting is just as terrifying, Great video!

"In the name of Jesus Christ I condemn you reveal yourself" and "Bathsheba!! I condemn you back to hell" is my favourite line of that movie ✌😀

When Bathsheba was on top of the wardrobe, that scene scarred me for life and was actually the first horror scene I cried

The first Conjuring movie scared the crap out of me and still does any time I re-watch it. Legitimately a very good horror film.

I love all of the CZ horror history videos. There’s so many other franchises or one off movies you can dive into and we’d be here for them all.

The way I saw it, when Bathsheba invades the Warren's house, she only went, when the locket was left at the farmhouse, creating a connection to the one in Judy's room. As for Bathsheba appearing with the Annabelle doll, I see that as her kinda borrowing Malphas' strength for the upcoming possession.

So my mom bought a house YEARS ago, and I just remember HATING it. No matter how sunny it was, it always seemed dark and depressing, I never felt truly alone, and shit was always breaking around the house. Sadly, my stepdad ended up having a random alcoholic-based mental break and completely fell apart, leading to their split and selling of that house not even 3 years after they had bought it. I was super upset about their relationship failing, but honestly psyched she moved.

Years later, when The Conjuring came out, I found out that that house was 3 down from my mom's old, spooky house, & that we were on the original land. I just remember feeling vindicated about every eerie, uncomfortable feeling I had ever had. That house has had new owners for like 2 years, and they sell tours and overnight stays... But they're trying to sell it now, too. I don't think they even live there. The old owners had chains and shit up around the driveway so no one could trespass.
