Bright Young Women was my favorite book that I read last year so I’m glad that you ended up liking it! I think it did a great job showing not only the attitudes of the era (the main character drove me nuts at the beginning of the book but I think she was supposed to) but also the way people lift up serial killers. I REALLY appreciated that they never gave him a name in the book just called him the defendant.

I’m sad you didn’t like The Bone Season, I liked it more than Priory!

Reading books with angry or angsty protagonists is such a case by case kind of thing. I hate angst and yet I enjoyed TBS cos it felt (to me, haha) that Paige was angry (and had trauma) and after mellowing and trusting and having conversations, that’s when she grows. Once a character annoys me though it’s hard to be un-annoyed so, oh well, I’m happy you tried it cos now you know! I will continue to enjoy the Bone Season series AND your videos. 😂

A male judge did called Bundy "bright young man", and a male judge called Brock Turner a "promising young man". That's why the titles are similar

Glad you were disappointed by The Bone Season - I was too! And I also loved Priory + Day of Fallen Night. Was curious if the newer version would be better, but sad to see it doesn't appear to be.

The majority of books that I read are written by female authors and I don't read a lot of fantasy to begin with so I can't say anything in terms of whether or not male authors write similar books to female authors and the female author's books get criticized for sounding YA but I have had many experiences with female authors that DO write adult books that come off as YA. If male authors write books like that, I would definitely notice it right away. Either way, I don't think the issue is female authors for writing the book or audience for noticing the trend. The issue is with the publishers who won't publish anything written by female authors until it is infantilized or turned into a YA book because those are big money makers for them. I have a very strong suspicion that they do not do this to male authors. They let them write whatever they want and then they have the female authors edit their books until it sounds like a YA book. That's just my take.

Bright Young Things was a fantastic read.

A cozy fantasy rec for you!! Between by L.L. Starling - definitely gives Gilmore girls vibes, but without being too derivative

Yay a new installment of this series!!
It is absolutely gutting you got rid of your old copy, to get an updated version and then ended up not liking it 😭

The Bone Season was sold and published as "New Adult" it was flashy and traditional publishing was trying to hop onto a self published romance trend so it's totally reasonable that it would read closer to YA.

Of course I don't know if she changed anyone when she reworked it but I am not surprised it read as YA to you!

For example, Sarah Maas' ACOTAR was also sold as NA but by the time it was released the category had failed to become a mainstream market so it was published as YA instead even though today that series definitely has adult content and should be shelved more adult.

I meant to comment on the organization video, but I am also a first genre, then vibes/height person. Sometimes I may face a book out or put some horizontal but I like the "full and cozy" look that organizing books by height gives. So I am loving how your library looking!

I’ve probably commented this before..but maybe you’ll see this since I saw your video so soon.
I’m always hoping you’ll read The Lighthouse Witches by CJ Cooke, it’s not a witchy spell book, the synopsis doesn’t do it justice. But it does something you love, the problem is saying what that is would be a spoiler. Whenever I see your videos I’m thinking you’ll love that book, and wondering what you’d say about it. The author also wrote a great not perfect mom character that I really appreciated. I heard another reviewer talk about how brave and important it is to write a character like that, one that gives a different take on motherhood, one that we’re not supposed to talk about, and it’s so true.
If you look into it, just know the book is much more than the synopsis, I think it was probably really difficult to market it.
