Metronomes are…tricky

I'm a cellist, so obvy I came out of the classical tradition. When I started trying to learn improv, jazz players introduced me to using a metronome on the back beat. Holy mother of ghod, that was eye-openingly difficult. Great training, but it can really make you feel like an idiot.

Offbeat is always tricky. Really hard to stay off it the longer you play and rhythm changes.

The fun in doing that as a bass player is playing around with micro timing. Like, I can practice to drag or push along to a metronome and learn to do it intentionally. Essentially what "groove" is to me being able to work microtiming and expressive with it.

Plus you can keep dividing the metronome speed until it only ticks once every bar or two. Then you're not totally relying on it, but still getting good feedback about your own pulse.

Metrónomo playing off beats is so fun, also playing just before or just behind. Great way to give momentum or chillness (?) to your playing

I concur, I keep very good time (jazz fusion drummer) but I’ve come to enjoy the metronome when used in this manner.

I dont like them either for the same reason I dont like tempo quantization its too mechanical but they can both be useful

If I skip a few days of metronome training I am gonna be sloppy when I come back to it. Unless Ringo Starr lives in your house, you gotta use 'em.
