Jesus, that look on the firefighter's face when he realizes how radioactive all the graphite on the ground is. Scary shit.

How did he manage to pick up graphite when there wasn't any graphite?

Misha was honestly the first character I relate to. Touching stuff I probably shouldn’t

Fun fact: Graphite Block in his hand after the explosion = 30.000 Röntgen per Hour 500 are lethal ....

Now there's a look that'll put terror into anyone's heart.

The horrifying stare of realization.

That piece of granite scared me more than Freddy Krueger when I was a child.

That happy look from Misha at 0:27 makes this scene sadder, he looked as a good guy and a very gently person, but one minute later he was submerged in pain and struggling for his life

I've had minor chemical burns, you don't realize it's going to hurt when you're first exposed, it initially often feels like the opposite of how it does when it starts to hurt (acid felt cool at first, and then burned like your hand was caught in a toaster and alkaline substances felt slippery like soap and then itched like rubbing sandpaper on sunburn). I was luckily dealing with pretty small doses and was always much more careful when dealing with the stronger stuff.

But I can only imagine the horror of picking up an unknown material, maybe feeling a bit of heat through your fire retardent gloves... only to moments later feel your hand burning away, knowing there's nothing that can be done to save it or you. That you're essentially doomed to a painful death from an invisible force that you know very little about. It's one thing to hear stories about the tickling of the dragon's tail going wrong and killing a scientist who knew the risks and died for the sake of discovery... it's another thing to be a typical worker with a straightforward job who unknowingly is sent to clean up a catastrophe of such magnitude and nuance. The scenes explaining how the reactor failed were understandably simplified so common people (like myself) could understand it... now imagine if the same audience was sent in to clean up, knowing even less about the nature of the failure. To me, that's the scariest aspect.

While the scientists and politicians arguing is engaging and dramatic, and is an excellent subject for the show to focus on, I always empathize most with the minor characters who permeate the episodes who don't fully understand what's happening, only that they have a job to do. The firefighters, the soldiers, the rooftop liquidators, the divers/suicide squad, the miners... while I'll luckily never be able to fully understand, it's those stories that help ground the more academic political-scientific aspects, and let you experience the direct consequences of the choices made by those at the top.

Reminds me of that story of the "tickling the dragons tail" experiment done in the US. They played around with the core of a nuclear weapon and managed to initiate a criticality event. One of the workers in the lab had the privilege of calculating that he had received a lethal dose from his proximity to the event. The following days proved him right.

That look at the end. Is like if Vasily knew this was not a fire 🔥 maybe he didn’t know exactly what it was but you can see in his face how scare he was 😰😰

Its a goddamned tragedy that all these brave bastards had to die so badly. My heart goes out to their survivors...if any.

The moment the firefighter realizes its not just normal fire, the fear in his eyes was just sad

He got 100 lifetimes worth of radiation in just that few seconds. So crazy.

The acting in this series is so brilliant.
Between this episode and his role as Hickey in S1 of The Terror, Adam Nagaitis is an absolutely brilliant facial actor, so much subtlety in his micro expressions yet you can intuit so much from them.
