This ghetto was immortalized in Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice". The Jews were despised for greed, but Shylock demands the exact fulfillment of the contract (the payment of the debt with a pound of the debtor's breast meat) refusing to receive twice as much in cash. The court action that leads to the punishment of the Jewish creditor is null, as it was judged by the debtor's mistress who disguised herself as a judge. And yet the overwhelming majority of the play's readers or spectators hate the merchant as if he were not the victim of the theatrical drama. Shakespeare mocks the widespread hatred of Jews, but those who hate them simply fail to understand the deeper meaning of his work.

Dear Jewish brothers and sisters but the same thing is happening to Muslims in Burma now, can you please join with international community to condemn it, what you have gone through is really bad and tough, I wish if I was alive to help you at that time but I wasn't born. But now its time to not allow same things repeating on some other oppressed people.

I was in the ghetto in Venice in 1998 and I spoke to Rabbi Mendelson from Chabah Lubavich. There are four synagogues en the ghetto that are Sephardi.

I can assure you all that Hip hop didn't originate here. If you ever read Daniel Silva, you'll know Gabriel Allon walked these streets.

Just for your information, the ghetto was enstablished to house jewish refugees that escaped the persecution in spain and france.
The Venetian senate was afraid of possible violence or vengeance from spain, thus they chose to create a community similar to the many other foreign quarters that altready existed in the city, which to avoid fights between rival states' communities in the city (such as those that often happened in the foreign quarters of constantinople) but also for the protection of the inhabitants there living were locked for the night, this killed two birds with one stone, it was less likely to create diplomatic incidents and made it so it was less likely that racial violence might break out between the jews and the many less accepting clients with which the republic had business with.
