Within the ghetto there are stars on the ground in front of doors and homes throughout. These stars mark the names of the Jews who were taken from their homes by the Nazi’s during WWII. It’s a beautiful area of Rome but has some really sad history behind it.

I remember getting lost in Rome and suddenly finding myself in the Jewish streets

Thrive As they always do; that’s why now as a Hispanic young man…. I only move into Jewish neighborhoods. Always the cleanest and safest for the money. Pride of ownership is real

Jews are treated well in Italy, or should I say same as anyone else. They give tours of Jewish life throughout history. The one in Venice was very interesting, but don’t forget to visit the great synagogue of Rome while there. Beautiful country.

Venice coined the term ghetto, like the word ciao, both words come from the Venetian language, called Veneto in Italy. It’s one of the most widely spoken languages still spoken alongside modern standard Italian.

I can't believe they're still Jewish people alive today with everything they've been through.

Get out, from 1550 to 1870?! That's wild. I can't imagine what the community would have looked like in the 1860s

Thank you for this. I was never taught of the Roman persecution of the Jewish people in school.

I recently visited the first ever “ghetto” in the world, it was made for the jews in Venice and it was such a tiny little corner of the city, barely a few blocks but it had 8 different synagogues for different nationalities crammed in there. It had gates at all the entrances that were guarded by christian guards all night, the only time anyone was allowed to leave after dark was when someone in the city needed the help of a Jewish doctor. Shit was very interesting

Except the ghetto is back, just not under forced oppression. It's more like a Chinatown. Not very big but it did warm my heart to see a thriving community of education, shops, restaurants. Unlike some cities I've been to, rome embraces Jewish people and they have one of the most beautiful temples I've seen, which is not a surprise since it was modeled to look like a church/cathedral.

I thought Napoleon tore down the walls, he was a friend to the Jewish people

So Shakespeare’s THE MERCHANT OF VENICE was based on a bit of history.

The Ghetto was established in 1555 in the Rione Sant'Angelo, near the Tiber River in the southern part of Campo de'Fiori. Its borders were laid down in a Papal Bull along with various discriminatory laws about what professions Jews could and could not hold.
