My favorite thing about the Loch Ness Monster is that in 2005, a group of MIT researchers decided to try to map the lake and hunt Nessie, but they instead found a random common toad just hanging around at 325 feet down in the water. They have no clue how he got down there, why he would have swam so far down, and it left them baffled that he could even survive such water pressure. He swam off and was never seen again.

A tier list AND an iceberg? What unending joy

Fun fact: jackalopes kind of exist in nature! Theres a specific type of papilloma virus that causes growths on jackrabbit heads that may or may not look like deer antlers. Very possible that aside from the inside joke thing, somebody actually saw a jackrabbit with the disease and thats how the legend was started.

"Understandably Mother Leeds was upset and cursed the unborn child" As you do. Not sure that helped the situation.

I love how the Loch Ness monster is described as docile and tourists show up with harpoon guns trying to ensure dinosaur extinction is complete.

hey wendigoon, as someone who's lived in northern michigan my entire life, (and also grew up terrified of the dog man) i wanted to shed some light on why he's so popular. it isn't just that it's a spooky design.

first, the dog man is only active every 7th year of a decade. second, he never, ever directly kills someone. all the references in the song of people/animals dying because it literally scares them to death. the appearance of the dog man is so blood curdlingly unnatural that it can literally make your heart stop. it's the idea that despite michigan's beautiful landscape, you can never really let your guard down or forget the unforgiving nature of... well, nature.

My mom once lied to me that she ran over the Goatman and ate his remains. I was more freaked out by her than the cryptid after that.

The Kraken is something that seems so plausible to me. Squids aren't solitary, they hunt in packs of up to 20. Imagine 20 ten foot long squids writhing around your ship, their beaks tearing at its hull while hundreds of tentacles lash all around you. Easy to see how that story becomes a myth about massive tentacled monsters pulling down ships

Fun fact about the Loch Ness Monster: A team of people were scanning the lake to try and find it, and they found what appeared to be exactly the monster laying on the bottom of the lake. However, it ended up being a massive monster prop from an old Sherlock Holmes movie that had been filmed there.

Mothman is such a perfect cryptid story. He has IT ALL. Scary sightings, a tragic omen, Men in Black rumors, government/military conspiracy, a shiny metal ass. What else could you ask for??

As a kid from Michigan I remember being so scared when we'd have sleepovers and someone would tell the story of the dogman. I used to think he'd be trying to come into my house or something. Still gives me chills thinking about it.

I am unable to express my pure, unbridled joy. When I was a kid, I was obsessed with cryptids, but there wasn’t too much information about them. Granted how much I enjoyed the conspiracy theory iceberg, I can’t wait for this to be done. May the rolling giant bless you with his kind eyes, Isaiah. Thank you.

Hi, Aussie here. I think the reason why the thylacine is on the iceberg is because although they're formally considered extinct, some people believe that they didn't completely die off and that there are still thylacines alive somewhere in the Tasmanian wilderness. Which makes them similar to more mythic cryptids like bigfoot or nessie.

I grew up in Wyoming (specifically Douglas, the hometown of the Jackalope) and the jackalope means so much to me personally. The original jackalope mount was put on display in the LaBonte hotel but it was stolen years and years ago, they never caught the guy.

Other fun 'facts' include:
- the current hunting season for them is only June 31st between midnight and 2am
- their milk is a powerful, sought-after aphrodisiac
- it's illegal to bait them with whiskey (a favorite of theirs)
- they can mimic human voices, mostly as self defense

you can still get hunting licenses for them at the Douglas visitor's center. there are also multiple 10+ foot tall statues of jackalopes around town
