Another trick: sometimes even if you do what you point out in the video, fsr still doesn't activate. In that case change to windowed mode (not full screen)

One other thing to add: If a game does not have the option to change Screen Resolution in-game (like Outer Wilds), you can select the gear icon on the right where "Play" is at, select Properties, then lower the game resolution that way. However, it will not actually adjust until you leave the game or are out of it already first.

Then FSR will activate. I set the resolution to 1024x640. In Outer Wilds, upon reaching Giant's Deep, going underwater now reaches close to 60 fps when normally it dropped to around 45 fps.

I was in fact using FSR wrong, thank you. I tried to change the resolution before toggling on FSR and after the fact that I turned it back up thinking the deck would handle the resolution on the sly, didn't realise that's not how it worked since I never use the performance overlay, at least the big one. Consider me a new subscriber =)

bro took 10 minutes to say lower the resolution

I don't blame anybody for mistaking how to use FSR. Technically, this is RSR not FSR and Valve mislabeled their own feature. This is also why in-game FSR looks better than RSR (what Valve labeled as "FSR")

For black ops 3, make sure you used T7 patch, it fixes the performance, I went from 40-60 FPS to a constant 60 fps and 1-2 hours more battery life
Black ops 3 is a dangerous game to play on any pc because of the RCE exploits, which can basically hack your computer. T7 patch should be required

Edit: I almost forgot, on an older version of this patch on windows it broke splitscreen, I think it's fixed but be aware. it should be fine on Linux though, although I sold my LCD for a OLED and I'm waiting for it to arrive I can't test it out

This vid worked for me as a reminder more than anything. Thanks my dude

Before changing any performance setting I’d highly recommend toggling the per-game profile. That way FSR and any other setting will be applied for the current game only

I just got the deck a week or two ago. It's how I play it docked to the monitor. Run the game at 720 and then upscale it to 1080 to the larger display.

Sam, you are a cool dude. I've really enjoyed watching your videos about SD the last few days, and it's gotten me extra pumped for the 1TB OLED I have arriving soon. :) I appreciate your enthusiasm and clarity, as well as the sponsors you work with. I actually don't feel the need to fast forward through those sections because they seem interesting and relevant to your videos. Also also, I'm trying to grow my hair out, and I hope it looks half as cool as yours, haha. Easy sub.

This video was super helpful, not only because I play BO3 on Steam deck all the time (and i hope to try this trick out later) but also because i had no clue what MSR even was.

I got a SteamDeck march last year and it's my 1st introduction to PC I'm usually a console gamer or switch.

I love my SteamDeck so much but I honestly don't know how to properly tinker with it, this video really helped me understand FSR and I thought by simply turning it on it was working.

Thank you for this video, sub from me and I hope you do some more tinkering videos in the future

i found this out on my very first day with my LCD Deck summer 2023 and i use it as much as possible. i usually pick 1152x720 (or the next lowest 16:10 ratio resolution) to enable FSR, set sharpening to 4/5 plus a decent amount of AA ingame if possible. that way lot of games almost look like native 1080p.

I've noticed that the basic system level FSR in the Steam Deck doesn't really increase the final resolution or even smooth out jaggies all that much. To really get a performance increase in modern games you often have to lower the resolution so much that FSR can't compensate when it comes to fine detail like text. But what it does well is increase the clarity of surfaces and textures! That alone may keep the visual fidelity at a pleasing level, or sometimes make it even clearer than native resolution. I think that older games benefit from it the most, where you won't have to lower the render resolution too much but still get the FSR benefits.
