Everything you didn't know about the Volkswagen Golf GTI!
It's the car that for over 40 years has made a name for itself as 'the only car you'll ever need'
It's a car so good that people like F1 driver Carlos Sainz, Jeremy Clarkson, and even Captain America (Chris Hemsworth), choose it as their daily driver.

But did you know that it's not actually named after the sport, but..the wind?
Or that it was doing 'plaid' WAY before Tesla came along?
Or that it was the first production car shipped with a dual clutch gearbox!?

Initially the MkII GTI was only made in Red, Black or Silver. One day in 1985 I told my GF
"I saw a White one at the dealer today!"
She said "Will you shut up about that car! Just buy one already".
I drove it for 13 years until someone hit me.

Mk 7.5 GTI owner, past 7.5 GTD owner here
I hated golfs for some reason until I got one myself, this car especially this gen the 7.5 with the digital cockpit is the best golf they ever made.
I'm selling it only bc I'm getting the 7.5 R but after that in not selling it anymore bc those cars will forever remain an icon.

GTI TCR owner here for the last 4 years just decided to keep it as really struggled what to replace it with at a reasonable cost. It's stage 2 400bhp so outside of an a45s or rs3 or some sort of sports car I really couldn't let it go for anything compelling enough! Really is a great car!

The DSG is a large part of the Golf's success.

Especially given the shrinking share of manuals on the road, the fact that most manufacturers aren't making manuals as stout as in the past, and given the liabilities with warranties that can impact manual drivers who accidentally money shift.

The DSG is quite stout and fun to use, especially when tuned.

And who doesn't love a good DSG fart!

7:57 the VW Polo (a smaller hatch than the golf) had the harlequin first and VW brang it to the golf for the us after some time because the polo was never sold there (still isn't) and people wanted the harlequin polo

Love this episode!! I have had my MK6 GTI for 9 years now and still love it since the first day of ownership! Been a long time VW fanboy and one of my ultimate wish cars to own was a GTI. Finally got one and haven’t looked back!

I think that the best option for a cheap daily golf today is a mk5/mk4, especially the mk5, mk5 comes from the golden era of vw, when they were throwing their money around and made some really good cars, its also cheap to buy and cheap to run. The most iconic ones tho are for sure the mk1 and mk2.

For me it will always be the golt 5 gti, it changed the game. I remember there were more golf 5 gti's on the road than the lower trims that's the 1st & only time I've ever seen that

I've owned 3 GTIs. Mk4, MK6 and now I have a MK7.5 EQT stage 1. Everyone kept asking me why I keep getting GTIs. I love them. Simple as that

Bought my first one in November '82, one of the first deliveries of the Mk1. Still have a Golf R in the garage today, with about 8 various GTIs/Rs over the years. They're like crack.
