Hospitality may often be all about a good sales pitch, but your viva is anything but that. This session was a workshop where participants discussed hints and tips about preparing for a viva voce examination, what to expect, and common questions asked. Those that joined us philosophised the purpose of the viva and how to approach it both mentally and physically to have the best chance of success. Dr Ioannis S. Pantelidis

Ioannis industry background in hotels and restaurants combined with his academic career has shaped his approach to theory and practice transforming him over the years into a practical philosopher. Dr Pantelidis is currently a Director of Doctoral Studies at the University of Brighton and the Lead Academic for Knowledge Exchange for the School of Business and Law. As a Past Chair of The Council for Hospitality Management Education, he still sits in the CHME Exec. He is Director of The Association of North America Higher Education International and In the Advisory board of Be Inclusive Hospitality. He is a Senior Fellow for Higher Education Academy and Fellow of the Institute of Hospitality.

Dr Helen Atkinson

Helen's career is in hospitality management and education. She started her working life managing her family’s hotel business and later enjoyed a successful career at the University of Brighton, as Principal Lecturer teaching Hospitality students. During this time, she published texts books and articles, also holding senior roles at School, Faculty and Institutional level. Helen has a PhD, is a Chartered Management Accountant (ACMA) and has an MBA from Henley Management College and a BA (Hons) in Accounting and Finance. Helen is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) and is proud to be an Honorary Fellow of CHME, and is an Honorary School Fellow at the University of Brighton. She is now a freelance academic and consultant working as an Associate Academic at the University of Derby Online (UDOL) whilst volunteering as a Governor at Plumpton College, the leading Land-based FE College in the Southeast.
