“Linger” (1993) is a tale of love, deceit, and the lingering feelings of desire for an impossible relationship, an impossible situation, and an impossible partner who broke the contract of love.

It was co-authored by guitarist Noel Hogan (music) and a newly hired 18-year-old Dolores O’Riordan (lyrics). In the text, Dolores describes being mistreated by her lover and seeing him with another girl, yet unable to break free because he lets their relationship linger. This hardly seems the stuff of dreams, but the feeling of first love is what she keyed in on.

The emotional, girlie sound was a huge departure for Cranberries, but WILDLY SUCCESSFUL. “Linger” received a lot of airplay from radio stations looking for an alternative to rap or grunge, and MTV put the video in heavy rotation. The Irish rock band became one of the BESTSELLING ACTS of the mid-‘90s‼️

The clip was a tribute to film director Jean-Luc Godard’s “Alphaville” (1965). In one of the rooms of an hotel, a silent movie is being shown, featuring 1950s stripper Blaze Starr.

The Cranberries performed this in several different arrangements, often doing it acoustic. On their 2017 album “Something Else, ” they included a version with the Irish Chamber Orchestra. 💔🎶💔
