~ Material Requirements ~
1 layer cake (40 - 10” squares)
2 ½ yards beige fabric (chain blocks)
2 ½ yards navy fabric (chain blocks and borders)
8 ½ yards backing fabric (OR 3 yards 108” wide back fabric)
¾ yard binding fabric

Personally, I would use the ruler lengthwise & cut the fabric in 2 inch strips...which is, as you stated, is more accurate way to cut fabric. You are using the same straight edge from which to measure.

Good tip on cutting with the 6 inch ruler. I seem to always flip my fabric around.
