As a 30-year owner of several different aircraft, my advice is to NEVER buy a $100, 000 plane with $100, 000. Instead, buy a $100, 000 plane when you have $120, 000, keeping $20, 000 in reserve.

Flown a lot of planes at this point. Tailwheels, high performance, complex, seaplanes, slow, fast... And I must admit... the searay was by far the most fun thing I've ever flown. Nailed it with this one.

Gosh dang it man, you're awesome. I've been wanting a plane my entire life. I recovered from homelessness and severe alcoholism a year ago not even close to having the $ for one at the moment, but having these videos Is super motivational. Not only are the graphics my favorite type of art style out there, the way you talk is like somebody giving purchasing advice IRL and its super enjoyable.
Thank you!

Its astounding how closely this lines up with my several years of "research" (read: longingly looking at planes on websites wishing I could one day buy one). Mooneys are simply too efficient to pass up, and Debonairs are not as sought after as their older brothers (sisters?) so they make for affordable yet stylish alternatives. Vikings, I would argue, do have some availability in the 65-80k price range with excellent avionics, but you have to look for a while. I saw one beautiful example go up on TradeAPlane for 65k and get snatched up within the week. The challenge with the Viking is knowing who to go to for maintenance, especially with regards to the wooden wings.
Overall, I think if I was buying my first ever plane and going for a four seater cross country, manual gear Mooney M20C is as easy as it would get. Plentiful, well known maintenance regiment, and very efficient.

Love my m20c 1967. But yes the back seats are small. More of a good 2 person cross country. But plenty of room for lots of snacks and bags!

The bonanza is an amazing airplane. it has the speeds of a fast cross country platform, the takeoff and landing distance versatility to allow it to land in shorter strips (grass etc) and has plenty of useful payload even with full tanks. I absolutely love flying them too.

It's like having three complete walk-arounds at once. My body is exhausted but thoroughly satisfied

Sea planes for the win! I'd love to see a guide for glider purchase - they get expensive pretty fast when you're looking at the modern glass ships, and that's without an engine!

A very cool video with beautiful drawings, as in all your content. As a bit of an aviation geek, I'm a big fan of your channel. But there's one small mistake: the manufacturer of the Wilga is not "P2L" but PZL - Państwowe Zakłady Lotnicze (it means "State Aviation Works" in Polish). By the way, could you maybe make a video about the Wilga or the TS-11 Iskra? Or both 😁

aanndd only because you mentioned Velocity :)

But seriously, a wider ranging video on this topic than any I have seen out there over the past 3 years... and all under 7.21 minutes...cool.

Great editing, really love the dense info with the little nuggets of personality. Thanks for keeping making these!

Love the humor. And I second the Mooney pick - electric gear versions are not that more complicated to maintain, there is just one more flaps motor :)

Buying a twin under 100 is buying an invitation to dual overhauls, and maybe a few ADs if you’re lucky.

you hit the nail on the head for the mooneys, best bang for the buck imo.

I love the look and practicality of a (larger, door-having) Velocity over a Cozy.. but the controls are sloppy (cable vs rods) and if you watch any videos of them landing.. they almost always hit hard. Cozys, like Long-EZs have some increased AoA at landing speed.. but the Velocities seem to need to be flown into the runway in a very shallow approach. If you look at Velocity landing videos, you'll only see a few squeakers (several of them are by Velocity test pilots), and a lot of pilots edit their landings out of their videos completely. I've been to a few canard fly-ins and you can see the same pattern in the pattern in person: Lots of Velocitys being slammed into the runway, while the Rutan & Puffer canards display much more graceful control. Cozys are very, well, cozy.. but that actually improves visibility since there's less plane under you, blocking your view of all the peasants on the ground.
