A colorectal polyp is a polyp (fleshy growth) occurring on the lining of the colon or rectum.[1] Untreated colorectal polyps can develop into colorectal cancer.[2]

Colorectal polyps are often classified by their behaviour (i.e. benign vs. malignant) or cause (e.g. as a consequence of inflammatory bowel disease). They may be benign (e.g. hyperplastic polyp), pre-malignant (e.g. tubular adenoma) or malignant (e.g. colorectal adenocarcinoma).

Colorectal polyps are not usually associated with symptoms.[2] When they occur, symptoms include bloody stools; changes in frequency or consistency of stools, such as a week or more of constipation or diarrhoea;[3] and fatigue arising from blood loss.[2] Anemia arising from iron deficiency can also present due to chronic blood loss, even in the absence of bloody stools.[3][4] Another symptom might be increased mucous production especially those involving villous adenomas.[4] Copious production of mucous causes loss of potassium that can occasionally result in symptomatic hypokalemia.[4] Occasionally, if a polyp is big enough to cause a bowel obstruction, there may be nausea, vomiting and severe constipation.[3]

At age 46 I was diagnosed with 56 tumors with the largest as big as a grapefruit. No symptoms, was caught on a routine exam by a Wonderful doctor. Went thru 7 months of chemo after 4 feet of colon removal called a resection. I was given 3-5 years but still going well after 8 yrs. every year they take out 13-28 more polyps. Just a maintenance, no big deal guys. Good luck!! Feel free to ask questions:)

I’m 36 and have my colonoscopy set for May this year due to rectal bleeding and hemorrhoids. Been suffering for a while and finally went to see a doctor. He recommending I do this procedure. Praying it goes well and they find that it’s just hemmroid and not the big C.

I’m an active woman in 40s and asked for a colonoscopy and I already have polyps and need to repeat the exam again. I don’t drink or smoke. I don’t eat red meat. I’ve already cut a lot of rice and bread in my diet. I am not prediabetic and take no medicine. I can likely increase my vegetable and fruit intake. I probably get 3 -5 servings but not every day. Some days you don’t have time to eat or cook much…. I’m seeing younger people with these issues. It’s a conundrum. Get tested early!

Thank you. I’ve heard you need to avoid processed food to prevent cancer. How do you do that in this day and age unless you live on a farm and raise and grow your own food? All food in stores have been processed in some way in order for you to get it. Because it says it’s fresh doesn’t mean it’s fresh, it’s been touched and manipulated in some way. Too much of anything is not good. Just eat in moderation as much as you can. Someone mentioned read meats are bad. Maybe so, especially if you eat it red and still bleeding.

I hear that if you eat a lot of processed meats like pepperoni etc... they help contribute to colon polyps.

Very good video! I’m 72 now, and I have a great respect for colon cancer! I know it is silent killer… I had one colonoscopy that I am remembering… no, I know I had two, though… I had the first one when I was 56, so I must’ve been about 66 when I had the second one! Not due until 76 again I guess! It is good, people, to get your colonoscopy!

I found out I have tubular adenoma, I'm preparing for surgery soon. Video was very informative. Back in June I started experiencing bleeding so that made me go in for a colonoscopy, I'm 41.

If youve had polyps removed you should have colonoscopy 3 years later. Then 3 years after that. If none returned its ok. If they find more they remove them, then its 3 years later again etc.

My cousin Austin dealt with this shit years ago, and no, he’s not 50, he’s like in his 20’s or 30’s. This cancer is starting become a serious problem in this world. Because I need to be very careful of myself. I have to prevent this shit from happening or else my life is over, permanently. My mother and my aunt could’ve gotten this because they’re above the age of 50 already, my mother is 59, and my aunt is 58. They’re still alive.
