Career Advice for Filmmakers!

Young film fans always ask me "How can I get work in the film industry?". It's simple just start doing films. Don't wait to get hired, because of most of the time you will just get hired to do some small job like pulling cables or helping to get lunch for everyone on set. If you want to be a film director then you have to start making films. To do that and to start making money from that it's easiest to start doing music videos. In this video I explain how to do that.

I got into an engineering college.
But the thing is I always wanted to become a filmmaker!

80% people says It's life of unemployment and I would make the worst mistake of my life by choosing career as a filmmaker rather than software engineer.
While other 20% encourage me to follow my dream.

Really good advice, I never considered a "look book" but I do try to add samples when I can, it makes perfect sense so to make your proposal stand out. I got my start filming friend's bands (for free) and reverse engineering after effects projects, to give them snazzy intros, motion graphics, etc. Started off with a cheap camera that was a few hundred bucks, and continuously upgraded while learning the ropes. Cool thing about filming band's and shows, is that if you're a fan of music you usually get backstage passes and have a lot of fun hanging out with the band. It's a long way to the top if you want to rock & roll! ;)

Great insight. My own thought is that stories can actually be used in a far wider range than music videos. Want to create be a documentary filmmaker? Exactly the same process, find people and ask to tell their story. Also a great training ground for working with non-actors and getting a 'performance' from them when getting cutaways & b-roll with them. Awesome video.

I've had a passion for film for about 10 years now. Started back when I was in high school, just playing around with some video editing for fun. Never pursued it though. Didn't think I could be successful enough to make a living doing it. Went the school route... Fast forward to the present and I have finally jumped into the world of film. I don't like the fact that wannabe filmmakers have to be kids. I'm 35 & still planning on making a film. I have my dreams & aspirations like everyone else. Filmmaking isn't sport. In sport you get about 10 years as an athlete before your body says it's had enough. Art can be embraced at any age so there are no rules in that sense. A 90 year old person can decide to take up filmmaking if they wish...we have to stop the ageist crap connected to filmmaking..

Tom I know you are always busy but seems to reply only messages you feel like 😰. I message you many times! I've been asking what's the minimum requirements for a film editing laptop. Can anyone help me on this please? If I buy 8gb ram and 1tb can I upgrade it later ?
