Steely Dan ~ My Old School (HQ Audio)

I remember the thirty-five sweet goodbyes
When you put me on the Wolverine
Up to Annandale
It was still September
When your daddy was quite surprised
To find you with the working girls
In the county jail
I was smoking with the boys upstairs
When I heard about the whole affair
I said, whoa no
William and Mary won’t do now

Well, I did not think the girl
Could be so cruel
And I’m never going back
To my old school

Oleanders growing outside her door
Soon they’re gonna be in bloom
Up in Annandale
I can’t stand her
Doing what she did before
Leaving like a gypsy queen
In a fairy tale
Well, I hear the whistle but I can’t go
I’m gonna take her down to Mexico
She said, whoa no
Guadalajara won’t do now

Well, I did not think the girl
Could be so cruel
And I’m never going back
To my old school

California tumbles into the sea
That’ll be the day I go
Back to Annandale
Tried to warn you
About Chino and Daddy Gee
But I can’t seem to get to you
Through the U.S. Mail
Well, I hear the whistle but I can’t go
I’m gonna take her down to Mexico
She said, whoa no
Guadalajara won’t do now

Well, I did not think the girl
Could be so cruel
And I’m never going back
To my old school

Bought the "showbiz kids" compilation years ago and thought it was the best, most comprehensive best of, even if it doesn't contain "home at last". Am now familiar with all their albums bar "Countdown..." (loving it so far) and "pretzel...) (i know!) And realise that if you need to hear the best of the Dan, you need to start by playing "Can't buy a thrill" and continu right through to "Gaucho" . There is nothing like them. They are unparalleled

Forgot how much I loved this song. Sounds a bit like early Chicago (Terry Kath era).

The caliber of musicians that can put together something of this magnitude is almost beyond comprehension.
I as a average musician, am humbled

The track that I never heard on the radio that much back in the day. It was like a magic back-cut clip. It would just show up at 3 in the morning somewhere

Good lord what a song. Can't believe it's taken me this long to actually really 'listen' to Steely Dan. I knew some of their hits from when I was a kid but I never listened to any other stuff until recently. Now I'm judging all other music against them.

I love their music I listened to them a lot back then. Music is not the same today half the words you can not understand and the curses is unnecessary. I am glad I was around
To enjoy real music that meant alot to us.

Putting aside the mini incantations that Mick Fleetwood and John McVee have taken Fleetwood Mac. You can’t put aside the original nucleus of the Mac, Peter Green.
I was around 16 when I was listening to this music. And to be honest with you, I didn’t really understand it. I am now 73 and it has come up many times throughout those years. Nothing can be said to describe the. Music genius of Peter Green.

Jeff Baxter could play. And the saxophones, wow. Listen to the last 4 minutes, Baxter kills it

This reminds me of my 2-year stay at a University in another state, after which my dad decided it would be better for me to stay home and go to the local branch of my state University..lol ! I guess he wondered where all the books I needed money for were, since I brought none home😂🤣

Although I really love this song... I secretly went back several times, but never on official reunions, no siree !
It's always quite an odd feeling to see the building, and to think back with mild (!) nostalgia to what was now more than 4 decades ago... Gosh, how fast that all goes !

First album was ok. This is the work that pulled me on board. Kept getting better and better.

What made them great is the studio musicians. All stellar players. Sadly the sound could never be replicated live.

A little before my time
But these are the 2 funkiest white boys !!

When I was younger I had a manager who used to pull up in his convertible Benz banging this shit loud

As I got older I get what he was feelin ..
This shit is legendary

My favourite Dan song. Has stood the test of time since I heard it over 50 years ago. Superb song writing, musicianship, arrangement and production. Never grow tired of hearing it. There’s a faultless cover version too…
