I totally burned out in April. This way I lost my internship and quitted coding for two last months. But the worst thing is that I have to graduate as a CS student in a week, but I have not prepared my diploma project yet.
Can't describe in words how bad I feel...

This is a very important tip especially for new/young software engineers! Dont exchange your long term mental health with out of life work balanced overtimes hours which will be almost forgotten as nobody will respect overtime results ...

Take it from me ( I code for over 5 years... )
If you want to be happy don't become a software developer.
Do you want some reasons?
- Web Tech changes every couple of monts, you need to continousle learn or you become absolete
- Burnout deadlinse
- Contrary to popular belife only 10% of Tech Engineers are self thought you will need University to break in..
- Tech goes remote / work from home/ rainbow farts and honey poison/ what I mean it will be outsourced to 3rd word countries like what happend with most Accounting jobs
- Competition is insane for the money what I mean you can learn building engineering or build bridges and you will have less absolasence as an Enginner but Software Engineers always live on the edge of being replaced..
- Juniour Software Developer market is oversaturated there are too many people. What bussinesses need is people with HIGH skill not LOW junior skill. So don't belive that saying that there is always demand for coding jobs, because that is a flat lie!!

- Depression and loneliness, you are always alone as a Web Developer, remember? work remotely? and all that jazz
- Unhealthy sitting at a desk staring at the monitor for 12hours a day will destroy your body. Don't belive me? Do that for a couple of years and you will see the effects.
- You really need a high above averate IQ to deal with abstract problems every single day of your life. It nevers stops! Always problems!!!
- If you still want to do it, probably you hate yourself really bad... or you hate social interactions... either way, I just wanted to warn you!!! because most of YouTube Coder Influencers lie to you by only telling the good parts. Because they want to seel you the dream and a course on how to code a "Hello World" program.
- Software Engineering is HARD, you can see that in the name, it is ENGINEERING it is as hard as building bridges or being a Doctor. Don't underestimate it how hard and mind burning this field is.

Hey man, I am a software developer from South Africa and I love your channel. These are all great tips, thank you. Another good tip to help relax is to cut back on your caffeine intake. I have been cutting back and it is definitely helping me.

i belive that the devs need more vacations, its an insult to get only 10 vacations day per year

It is really hard to keep up with the tech enhancements. I sometimes think that I have no life :( I have no wife, no kids, no house. I work, read, learn and that's it.
Even if I am getting the money, I can't properly spend it. Who needs a profession that takes your life? I've had a talk with a bank employee about having a sad job and she told me that her job sucks and not mine. I guess everyone had his/her problems. That's life I guess.

There's so much I want to accomplish, such as build a portfolio for a gaming internship and other programming internships incase the gaming one doesn't work out. I unproductive if I'm not working something but then when I burnout, it takes even longer to come back from it. Thanks for the tips!!🔥🔥

I burnt out completely around by the end of Jan this year. I'm still recovering... everything you pointed out has helped me over the past 6 months. The biggest kicker is the sleep schedule. It's SO difficult with the sunset and sunrise changing so drastically. I recommend those who are having trouble to get some blackout curtains. That helped me regulate my sleep somewhat, even though it's making me get up a little later. It's better than waking up, feeling groggy, then can't think well for the rest of the day.

If you don't take care of yourself, chances of other people helping you are pretty low. Don't live to work. Work to live. If your body and your mind are not working properly, there's no way you are going to do your job correctly. ANd that build up frustration, and it's really easy to get into that loop, and really difficult to get out of it.
Take care of you, and enjoy your life fully. Love you!

Long-time listener, first-time commenter. Reading helps me relax, which can also be good at night when in bed to help me sleep faster.

Thanks for the practical tips! I find that when it comes to sleeping, drinking tea and/or stretching before bed helps a lot with just calming down. Falling asleep is the tough when you're thinking about that error on line 58 in your code😌

a thing most developers neglect is their emotional health, especially supressed past traumas, undealth I mean we burnout because we are working compulsively and if we deal with emotioanl shit then it's easy to not work, and just focus on the things that matter in the work itself, to not create bugs and stress

You know, it feels great to see one of these videos sometimes. Thanks man.

Great advice Sam! 👍 Rest assured that burnout is very common outside of the tech industry too. Coming from the animation industry, I can confirm that it's very often that animators and creatives are driven to exhaustion very often in an effort to prove that they're good at what their jobs. It's really encouraging watching people acknowledge the importance of physical and mental health outside of work lately! Keep up the good work! 👍

Uncaring managers that over deliver on your behalf while saddling you up with work you already said you can't finish...oh and the timeline is 4 weeks sooner.

Unreasonable, directionless, inconsistent management is why I'm burnt out.

Tight deadlines. Agile. Aggressive managers. Legacy code. High business complexity with partial or no knowledge transfer. Choosing a banking project is perfect to burn out.

You were doing exactly what I was doing. I work a lot and then exercise to help with stress. But then exercising makes me tired.
