If I could only grow one regular sized tomato, this would be it ☝️ Costoluto Genovese is as beautiful as it is deliciously versatile.

Sown in March and kept safe from frost, then grown on inside my greenhouse. It’s been one of the best croppers this year, and has handled the heat and drought conditions well too. It’s a tall cordon variety so I have trained it up string attached in the ceiling and I’ve trimmed side shoots.

If you grow tomatoes in pots, containers or grow bags it’s important to feed weekly with a tomato liquid feed (follow instructions on the bottle) once the plant starts producing flowers. This is not necessary when grown in the ground unless you grow them closer together than 40cm.

Like with a lot of heritage tomatoes the flavour is exceptional and it’s amazing in both cooking and eaten raw in salads or on toast.

As we are now in September and the blight conditions are here (wet and humid) it’s a good idea to trim almost all leaves off the plant except the top. You can also reduce watering. This will speed the ripening of the green tomatoes. You can leave the top growing if you want, we may have a late onset of cold weather and especially cherry tomatoes might still produce a few more trusses.

Have you discovered any new varieties this year? And will this one be on your list next year?
