High-precision time synchronization can be an important component in high-performance distributed systems- with Meta reporting a performance improvement of 100x when switching from NTP to PTP. Increasing the precision of the time synchronization by using White Rabbit and PTM may provide additional performance benefits. A low-cost White-Rabbit-capable NIC is being developed to support this use case. The NIC hardware consists of a Xilinx K26 SoM- and the firmware will use the Corundum open-source NIC framework. White Rabbit is a sub-nanosecond precision time synchronization protocol. Together with PCIe PTM- this should provide a significant improvement in time synchronization performance over commerical NICs that only support PTP."
