We were catching 100 plus pounders in the 1980's at Milford where smokyhill and republican rivers meet

Steve Douglas one of the original cat fish tournament fisherman summed it up very well when speaking about flatheads. "Until someone starts using 20, 30, or 40lb bait we probably wont see a 250lb flathead. But I for sure believe they are out there."

Back in the 80s divers we're diving the Fontana dam doing inspections in Tennessee they said there were six foot long catfish down there

Eh, I don't believe it's out of the realm of possible, but I don't suspect there's many out there past 150ibs. It comes down to food supply and time and space to grow. Most of the waters they might be are fished heavy enough that I believe we'd be seeing them if they were there.

However, it's a big world and stranger things have happened. Keep fishing and enjoy the adventure! 🐳

I like that you ponder these kind of things and post a video about it. I find it fun to think about. I’ll try thinking outside the box.

I’ve noticed over the years hunting whitetail bucks in Missouri that the older bucks can end up spending most of their time in smaller areas where they do not encounter humans. I think they end of in these places after getting bumped around (by human encounters) until they find a spot people don’t go. They feel safe there and stay. An example would be a brushy pond dam in a middle of a field owed by a person that doesn’t hunt surrounded by an acreage that gives them what they need. I imagine that these bucks are different than the rest. Each deer are individuals after all. For example some bucks don’t rut as hard and don’t fight other bucks, and survive better because of this. We are talking about a buck that has gotten to grow older because his behavior is different such that it never gets taken during the hunting season, never gets run over by a car, never gets chased by coyotes, etc.

Similarly, maybe a record blue catfish would be in a place that is very difficult or impossible to fish or in a place anglers don’t recognize as a good fishing spot. Maybe this record fish is different than the rest and does not migrate long distances if it has everything it needs in a small home range. If we are talking about a 200 pound fish, surely it’s doing something different than the rest. It could have spent its life traveling the river but found a sweet spot that has everything it needs and is never bothered. Then decides to just stay there and retire. lol. Well, my point is that a fish that big is probably doing his own thing and has remained undetected.

Here’s an observation. I noticed that 150 lb catfish’s head is pristine. There is not a mark on it. I wish I could see the rest of that fish. But it looked as if it has had a very easy life. I’m not sure if that means anything, but I wonder if hung around a place where food was very easy to find. Maybe it hung around a marina where a restaurant throws out food or something, lol. It also looked young even though it was probably fairly old to be that big. Maybe it had good genetics or something.

Milford lake in Kansas is pretty deep it wouldn't surprise me if there is a world record in there even Tuttle Creek Lake. The biggest I've caught is 65lb blue catfish. The Kansas River has plenty of forage fish and structure . Bullshark would definitely eat big catfish. I think it's possible for blue catfish to get up to 200lb.

If you are crazy enough to think they're not 200 pound catfish in Kerr Lake you need to rethink everything you know about catfishing

Mississippi, missouri, kerr lake, and a very few others have the potential for blue catfish between 150 and 200.

I live along the Green River in Kentucky. I grew up hearing stories about divers going down and seeing catfish big as cars. They swore they'd never go back down they were so big. If true it'd be a new species. Also growing up I was told it's the deepest river in the world. It does flow through Mammoth Cave National Park so it's connected to aquifers. Both stories might just be local legend. Geographic lists show The Congo as the deepest though.
200lb blues? Could be.

Lots of dams around the country have stories of massive catfish. If you want to catch them you probably need to start with big baits.

Something I've kinda wondered is why do we almost exclusively fish the bottom for Blues when they feed so heavily on bait fish that are absolutely NOT bottom dwelling fish? I don't see many people fishing suspended baits shallow except in shallow water. I can't only think of Justin from Kayak Catfish that will occasionally fish baits shallow under balloons in deeper water. I for sure would think there are plenty of world record and bigger fish in plenty of places in the country.

I've caught bigger channel catfish in lakes than I have in rivers. They don't have to spend as much energy swimming around as they do in flowing rivers so I'd say a record could be waiting in a damned river reservoir.

Bull sharks and catfish have coexisted in ther Mississippi River watersed since the end of the last ice age. And blue catfish, flathead catfish, and channel catfish all reproduce in enough numbers to reach old age ane maximum size. In addition to eating catfish, bull sharks undoubtedly eat the large numbers of common carp, silver carp, and bighead carp, as well as bigmouth, sma;;mouth, and black buffalo, in the Mississippi River watershed too. But bull sharks are only seasonal inhabitants in the Mississippi River watershed as they cannot survive in water temperatures below 69 degrees Fahrenheit. The Mississippi River and all it's major tributaries have enough food fish for all three big catfish species to grow to their maximum size. BTW, the underwater video clip at 3:39 shows channel catfish.

I do know of a scuba diving quarry that has big blue catfish it. Divers feed them a steady supply of hot dogs. Give them a couple decades and maybe one of those might reach 200 pounds. lol.

I think you are shorting the Missouri River the fist catfish over 100 pounds came from that river. Many who fish that river do not disclose wear they fish. Blue catfish are caught approaching 100 pounds every year at least they were 10 years ago. 90-100 pounds every flats were also regularly reported in that river at that time I wouldn’t be suprized to see a 200 pounds every flats blue or flathead from that river any more than I would to see one come from the Mississippi river
