We moved to a small town on the countryside with less than 1.000 people. To ensure that the town doesn't decay we have a squad of retired old men calling themselves 'the grey men'. Once a week they group up to maintain and restore the things that need a loving hand around town. They get a few means by the state, but they work free of charge. So they mow the public lawns, trim bushes, paint benches, fix smaller things at my son's nursery etc. Big respect to people like this (including you Van)

$500 is crazy, but that's still an epic repair

Dude! I’m not even handy, but I appreciate everything you’re about. The art of storytelling! Infectious! Would love to have a coffee with you one day!

Lol I swear, even though these tasks are amazing and you get respect not only from others but self-pride in doing it, every single time I take on a DIY job myself- it ALWAYS comes out more expensive than I planned or having professionals do it.

But the advantages are: you get it done way faster than waiting for appointments and time slots from professionals, and the aforementioned pride. It just makes so little logical sense that it costs MORE.

This repair shouldn’t have been so frustrating for you but it’s a lot harder if you only have a Tom Sachs school level competency.

I’m happy (or deeply sorry, I’m not sure) to anounce that it still retain the mentioned finger pinching capabilities, for sure.

I often think that play parks are the canary in the community coal mine.

A signal of the health of our community.

I wonder if Van would get behind a Wikipedia for community action?

There’s how tos and YouTube tutorials but there is an element missing to enable the masses to step into making our place more Liveable.

Pilot hole! There's always time for a pilot hole grasshopper.

Your money would have been better spent buying an inexpensive lathe.
You could get the precise diameter and a truly concentric and perpendicular hole in each piece using any material from wood to metal.

It's possible to use smaller bits and size up to avoid cracking..

Drills for metall aren't good for wood.

I dont understand why they split in half when drilled it. Couldn't you have just started with smaller pilot hole and work your way up the the right sized drill bit?

Nicely done! I’ve never seen one of these before. Is it a game? If so, does anyone happen to love the name of it?

About an hour’s work if you have a metal lathe. Time to level up.

3D printing the parts would’ve saved time and money 🤷🏻‍♂️
