Finally, FINALLY, a montage gets Ovechkin's top 3 goals right. Usually it's the one scored against Montreal that's missing and the one against Rangers that's way too low. There's never any question about #1, but #2 and #3 deserve way more recognition as well. #3 for just how it was such typical, iconic early-era Ovechkin, and #2 for being such a beautiful move, one that I have not seen replicated EVER in the NHL with such grace and efficiency, followed by the full Ovechkin-like finish. #2 is my personal favorite. It's such a (relatively) simple move, but he does it so perfectly there, and it looks so insanely cool, that it's gotta be up there.

Other forgotten favorite moments of mine are the discredited "nuclear explosion" goal, where he punts Hall GIll into the goalie and scores, but the goal is later overturned because the NHL referees seem to think your own defenseman falling on top of the goalie is goalie interference, and the legendary one-timer, where he hits the pipe, but the shot was so hard that the ping of the crossbar happens almost before the shot even happened. And the one from his early days where he plays pond hockey goalie in front of the Caps' net and saves a shot from going in.

In 1994 I became a die hard hockey fan. I would watch every televised game. For sometime ESPN had two games on Tuesdays and Thursday but I never had a favorite team. In 2005 after seeing Ovechkin play four games I found myself saying, How can I not be a fan of this guy. Thirty years I have been watching hockey and still do not have a favorite team. Nineteen years later I am still an Ovechkin fan which I guess that makes me a Caps fan by default. Not really sure.

The thing this video doesnt show is how physical his game was. Especially early in his career. Donald Brashear told an interviewer once that he was brought to Washington to be kind of a protector and when he asked 8 if he wanted him to take care of business, Ovi looked at him and said "I got it." Or something along those lines. So when i see people complaining today that he just picks his spot its so telling to me that they didnt watch the first 10+ years of his career. To be almost 2 decades into this league, and to still be a 30 goal scorer after playing as physical of a brand of hockey as he played is amazing. I think the OG fans appreciate him still for what hes meant to the game. Newer fans who are only seeing the old Ovi need to go back and watch those early highlights.

Not to mention the goals, what really impressed me is how fast (or dexterity) he gets back up on a skate or 2 (without crashing awkwardly into the boards) after falling while scoring a goal.

His Hal Gill goal that got called back is still my all time favorite goal of his. Listening to Pierre talk about Ovechkin not being human never gets old. I still think the call was wrong and it should have counted.
