I am Der Geher and I walk through Altenwerder. Starting at the Süderelbe, the walk goes along the Moorburger Elbdeich (Elbe dike) and views over the Altenwerder harbor. Then the path leads through the Altenwerder Bioreserve to St. Gertrud Church. The trail ends with a view of wind turbines.

Altenwerder was a local supplier to the city with about 1000 inhabitants in the 1800's. Mainly vegetables, milk and fish were the island's income. From 1960 the harbor was expanded and inhabitants left the area. Today, only the church exists next to port facilities. Rare species can be found in the natural area.

St. Gertrud Church is a fascinating place. Not too long ago, there was a whole district here. I'm glad at least the nature is preserved here (as for now)
