2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe | Lots of fun but... | Steve Hammes

When I first heard that BMW was making a 2 Series Gran Coupe I just assumed it was going to be a 4-door version of the current model, much like the 4 Series Gran Coupe. But it isn’t. Unlike the standard Coupe and Convertible, this one is based upon a front-wheel drive car made in the UK.

MSRP as-tested: $48,195

That 48k price tag is dead on arrival, maybe 10 grand less I can see it, but not 48k no way no how!

BMW "Me Too", CLA This shold've been a 1 Series Gran Coupe & maintained an all RWD 2 Series, uncanny sense of direction by BMW

5:24. Steve’s overall take on the 2-Series.

You can get a Genesis GV80 or a fully loaded G70 3.3T Prestige at that price... I know it's not the same class but just to put things in perspective.

We’ve owned 4 BMWs. But this review reminds me why I haven’t since 2013, why my next sedan will be a G70 manual and why my wife now drives a Porsche.

Great review Steve. But BMW has lost its way. As a previous owner of three BMW’s, the only one I still own is my E39. I owned a4 series Gran Coupe, but traded it in for Lexus RC F. However, the E39 is still a joy of what BMW used to be. This 2 series GC looks like a mix between Ford Focus and Kia Forte IMO.

Nice idea, but I'm not sure if it's going to last.

BMW prices are insane. I’ll take my Model 3 all day for same price.

I’ve just ordered one, I live in England and they are way more expensive over in America

So other than harsh suspension when heating potholes seems like you really liked the car, but your tone implied it's not a good buy. Seems strange. Perhaps add which competitor you would prefer over it?

Great review as always — Honestly it gives me Buick Verano vibes especially with certain wheel options 🤢 and $48k? The CFO in Munich (or wherever they’re based now) has lost their mind. The European brands’ nomenclature is seemingly out of control at this point stuffing a vehicle in every nook and cranny ... enough is enough already!

Love the style, hate the price especially since its lacking a bunch of goodies. Toyota comes with all that stuff standard now. My problem with BMW always been the over use of plastic and reliability issues and how expensive that are 2 maintain. Rich or not I want a reliable vehicle.

I like the look, but for me I would get the M235I with the 301 hp!

I don’t think this will sell very well, Steve. BMW is trying to remain the sales leader by introducing newer models that have done well with Mercedes. However, I think the CLA and A Class got it right.

Regarding the impact harshness, do you make sure that the tires are inflated to their proper pressure once you take possession? I understand that the tires are over inflated at the factory. So that way the tires are not flat spotted while sitting at the dealership's lot. But most dealerships don't adjust the pressure during prep and the new owner leaves the lot with over-inflated tires 🤦‍♂️

This 2 Series GC is a nice looking car - but I will stick with my 2nd BMW (well, my wife drives the 230ix and I drive the M340ix). The 230ix is a real BMW. The GC is a Mini in disguise. And I paid way, way less for the 230ix. 😎
