The new 2022 BMW X1 is the third iteration of the Bavarian brand’s smallest SUV – and the second compact BMW SUV to be based on a front/all-wheel drive platform.

As such, it builds on all the learning of its forebear, bringing more interior space, more technology and more equipment to its fight against rivals like the Audi Q3, Lexus UX and Mercedes-Benz GLA.

But will all that offset the new BMW X1’s relatively conservative design and higher prices? Scott Newman investigates.
