4 days at sea (part two) - Sailing Tarka Ep. 16

Tarka is a 1973 Albin Vega 27 (8.2m) that I bought sight-unseen and without sailing experience on the island of St. Martin in April of 2017. I was thrust head-first into ocean sailing as I got Tarka safely south from what would become the most devastating hurricane seasons on record. We are now working our way west towards the Pacific.

I am sailing Tarka around the world in part to raise money and awareness for coral conservation by supporting the Coral Reef Alliance. You can learn more here:

or visit their website directly:

If you make a donation to their website directly in Tarka's honor, please send me an e-mail copy of your receipt so I can keep track of Tarka's fundraising. You can forward to:

Additional support for Tarka’s sail for CORAL (The Coral Reef Alliance) comes from donations by:

Soylent - Healthy provisioning for the long offshore passages
Sta Lok - Swage-less terminals for portions of Tarka’s rigging, making it an easy DIY job and allowing for easy inspection

Never skip anywhere! It is better to regret something that you have done rather than something you haven't!

Hi your comment about disengaging the tiller auto helm is simply managed by the way you rig your last chance floating line. Simply run it into the cockpit and rig so that if pulled from astern it will raise the arm off the tiller and there you go. One pull on the line autohelm disengages and boat will round up and you can work your way back aboard. But you should really always be in a safety line and harness when on deck so this is unlikely to happen. :)

"I think I'm content out here & being alone"... Just how I feel sailing single handed.

Just now discovering your channel. Kinda addicted. Looking into a 25’ Seawald. If I were only 20 years younger to go where you have gone!

Outstanding. I’ve watched some of the most famous sailing channels and have to say yours is the most wholesome and genuine. Cheers to being a standup guy with a true talent for harnessing ‘life’.

Downhaul on the wisker pole to stop it kicking up in the gusts and rolly seas👍

Because the Vega is a wee bit tender until about 15 degrees, wing running can make even the best of us a little wobbly. I personally avoid wing running whenever possible. Congrats on completing this leg of your journey.

Hi, you just sailed into my life which is no longer on the ocean but sailing lives on in your being long after the sails are in their bags. I like what you have happening and seem to have a good disposition to be a skipper. This calling will certainly form you in valuable ways. Infinite Highest Blessings

Great video, thanks for sharing your adventure. Very gutsy effort in such a small boat. I really enjoy your narration.

Nicely done video. As a complete none sailor it's nice to see the camera rolling while you work on the sails n such. Is there a full tour of Taka? Be nice to see the cooking/ sleeping arrangements.
