How to do wicked chops

In this video I explain how to do chops with lots and lots of backspin.

A chop is a defensive stroke which you usually play further back from the table. The aim is to gets lots of backspin on the ball to make it hard for your opponent to attack again.

In the video I discuss Ferenc's chopping technique, the contact point and the use of long pimples.

Enjoy!

Great video! I used to be an avid player in the modern defensive style. I took a 9 year hiatus and I'm just starting to jump back in again. Your technical description mentioned a couple things I'd never thought of before but are right on point. One thing you might mention (perhaps another video idea) is the pro's, con's and why's of playing your LP with an OX or up to a 1.5 sponge. Also, why chopping with LP (like Joo) vs SP (like Han Ying) as another idea, especially with the ball changes. Keep up the good work! Thanks!

Thanks for this video! New player here, I'm really struggling with my chops, I just never seem to connect! I'll watch this a few more times and give it another go.

You're such an excellent coach I don't know why other videos don't include these details

That forehand Tom, try to make the move finish infront of your head for optimal control and power. And that index finger, lowering it would be a really good change that could help control, feeling and maybe avoid wrist injuries. Just opinions though! The video though, very well done, thanks for explaining the chopping tecnique!

Stand square or slight turn, same side knee bent , waist turned and rotates with stroke, start stroke at shoulder height go down to knee . Contact open racket to make contact at the bottom of the ball and make brushing contact . As he contacts the ball, gives acceleration which gives the underspin . To keep ball low, make contact at net height or lower . Follow through is in the direction of ball . Or may go through towards opposite side depending on how you're facing the ball .

Hi, thank you for the video! I refuse to switch to long pips, although I am an all-around unorthodox player using inverted rubber on both side (Dignics). I have questioned if I can become a strong chopper and add that skill to my arsenal using inverted rubber. This video is great news and can start training. Do you have any recommendations for rubber good for both chopping and attack style play (ex. Hard or soft rubbers? Sponge thickness? Etc.) Thank you!

Good technique helps but so does a good chopping rubber. Any recommendations.

Hi! Great video (as usual) - I love your channel.
What material does Ferenc use? He uses the black side at first for both backhand and forehand during the tutorial. Later, in the "Tom vs. Ferenc" he switches between red and black to deliver different shots.

Why is this? Which colour has which material?

Am I crazy or do you look like a giant in the first half of the video whilst Forence looks like he is barely the height trimming around the wall 😂 is this camera trickery or forced perspective?! Nevertheless, great info and great video! 🏓
