Neutrality Questioned - Russia's South Africa Warship Visit Raises Eyebrows
Показать описание
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived in South Africa on Monday for bilateral talks with his South African counterpart, Naledi Pandor, amid concerns about the country's stance on the Ukraine conflict. Mr. Lavrov's visit is the first stop on a tour of Southern African countries as Russia reaffirms its commitment to the continent.
Following Mr. Lavrov's visit, Russian warships will arrive in South African seas next month for drills alongside Chinese ships. Russia will host the second Russia-Africa Summit in St Petersburg in June, after it was postponed last year due to the war. South Africa has accepted an invitation to the summit, which was convened for the first time in 2019.
The most recent developments indicate a shift in the country's initial approach, in which it asked Russia to remove its military from Ukraine. While the administration argues its position is non-aligned rather than neutral, the opposition Democratic Alliance has criticized this as "semantics".
According to Darren Bergman, Shadow Minister for International Relations and Cooperation and MP for the country’s official opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, “You can’t call that neutral.”
