Can a country stay neutral in the face of war? | Inside Story

Many countries have decided to avoid taking sides in Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

However, the concept of neutrality is being questioned.

The invasion led to formally neutral Finland and Sweden applying to join the NATO military alliance.

Even Switzerland, known worldwide for its neutrality, has defended imposing sanctions and freezing Russian assets.

So what does being neutral mean in today's world?

But in 2003 when the US invaded Iraq, NATO invaded Yugoslavia in 1999 and people worldwide particularly western nations seem to be silent???
Unlike the current Ukrainian situation in which we withness politicians wearing the Ukrainian flag on their jackets, football matches using Ukrainian flag as corner flags, The Brandenburg Gate lit up with Ukrainian flag at night and even sending a huge amount of money and weapons to support Ukraine etc...Why? are we treating people equally? Or just selective support only??

Actually, it doesn't really matter whether or not sanctions can be considered an act of war as far as neutrality is concerned. The only thing that matters is the fact that you are only sanctioning one side in the conflict, that's what breaks with neutrality.

How many sovereign nations has the terrorist state usa invaded sins its creation on stolen land?
