How to find a Bad Dead Christmas Light Bulb, using a simple Voltage Detector

What if ALL of the lights and wiring show active on the voltage detector? I just tried it on my vintage snowman, but no luck. Everything from the plug in to the end is showing electricity.

Only works on 2 wire strands! How do you detect bad lights on 3 wire strands???

tried that on a "whimsical snowman" with that exact same detector that you are using, and the thing was going off before I could even get close to the wiring lol (the lights are are bundled together in the body of the snowman... not in a nice laid out line like normal strings of lights :(

Agree with the comments below. What about 3 wire light strands which are far more common? I think one wire will carry current always so we need a different method.

This looks like a string with only one string of lights in series. I'm curious how it will work with my strings containing 2 strings x 50 lights. That adds a third wire to the whole thing except for the the two wires in the center of the strand. I'll be checking t his.
