What if minions were like parasites like you said, and they evolve through each despicable me film. So in the 3rd film they are independent and don't need Gru. That's why they can escape prison and pretty much run the prison in the film.

I remember that on the Minions movie when the minions found that ice cave they were all excited at first, but soon became depressed because they had no boss. The narrator said something about unless they find a leader to serve, the minions would soon perish.
