I am going to start this feature by inventing a term…”ro-rom-com”. It’s my name for a ‘rock and roll romantic comedy.’That is how I would describe the origin story of the song “Don’t Come Around Here No More” by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. The tale began to simmer backstage at a Eurythmics concert at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles in 1983.
Eurythmics were white hot- fresh off one of the most captivating hits of the year with “Sweet Dreams (are made of this)” that was a huge international smash.

The show was packed with celebrities, and music industry dignitaries that were curious to see the exciting duo of Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart. After the concert, the backstage area was a scene of who’s who in Hollywood in the early 80s.
One of the stars hanging out backstage was Stevie Nicks.
Stevie was standing in the dressing room doorway, and immediately caught the eyes of Dave Stewart.

Dave remembered Stevie wearing a faux (rhymes with low) fur coat, that reminded him of the first time he met Annie Lennox.
Surprisingly, Dave did not know who she was, but he was immediately smitten by her intriguing beauty, and her long flowing hair. When Stevie recounted meeting Dave for the first time at that backstage encounter, she recalled Dave looking at her straight in the eye and saying “I want to be your boyfriend.”
Unbeknownst to Dave, Stevie had just split with her boyfriend, Joe Walsh, the day before. Apparently, Stevie & Joe had a huge fight and broke up.

Stevie invited Dave to go back to her house for a party, and a few moments later, Dave was in the back of a limo with Stevie and her back-up singers on their way to Stevie’s house. Dave didn’t even have a chance to change out of his sweaty stage clothes before they left for Stevie’s place.

When Dave & Stevie and her friends got to Stevie’s house, Dave wandered from room to room, while Stevie and her friends disappeared into a bathroom to indulge on some substance. After what seemed like hours passing, Dave grew tired, and having no idea what part of LA he was in, or what hotel he & Annie and the band were staying in, he fell asleep in one of the bedrooms around 3 am. Are you with me so far??? Dave was awakened by the sounds of rustling doors and closets, around 5am, only to find Stevie in the room where he had been sleeping, trying on Victorian styled clothing, and then the two rock stars had a romantic tryst.

Poll: What is your pick for the strangest song of the 80s?

Couldn't agree more about Petty. He was a treasure, and will be missed forever. I'm a much bigger fan of his 70s material, but even this song still evokes good memories for me, where most 80s music does the opposite. Petty has always been a favorite, and his music will live forever.

Most stories involving Stevie Nicks seem to have a touch of the surreal.
That bit of the strange makes her unique and I love her all the more for it.

You couldn't watch an hour of MTV in 1985 without seeing this video and people never got tired of it. There was nothing else like it on the channel at the time.

Being an 80s teen, this just brings back so many happy memories. When we thought we were invincible.

THIS is why I love your channel, Adam. Damn good story. I swear anytime Tom Petty is involved in one of your posts, it always leaves me smiling. He was a class act.

I honestly wondered how this song was written. It was very different than every other Petty song. I knew Dave played on it, but had no idea how involved in the writing he was. Just a phenominal story!! I love it! In my opinion, Tom Petty was America's rocker.

I still miss Tom Petty so much!! There are so many songs you could do from Tom. I remember this music video being on MTV all the time. Tom ruled the music video format for so many years. Great video and information Professor.

In 1985 I went to Basic Training in the Army. During basic, you essentially have no access to music.

On the day we were granted “ freedom”, I bought a small radio tape player ( like a Walkman) and put on the head phones. This was the first song I heard played. And what a song it was. This will always be a special song to me.

This is a rare song perfectly encapsulating the point in a breakup where you’re finally emotionally FREE.

I am sure I said it before but it definately deserves to be said again. Subscribing to this channel on YouTube has been one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Just think of how many great songs wouldn't exist without Stevie Nicks' creativity and inspiration from her love life drama! She is a true rockstar!!

Holy cow, that was a wild ride of a story! The music world is such a huge network and all the connections within it are astounding! Now that I know this song was by Dave Stewart I can totally hear how it sounds like him, too-super informative as always 🙏

PS-the video creeped the TF out as a kid 🤣

Professor, once again you hit the bullseye. Tom Petty was not only an American legend but very missed. Compare his music to anything being played now. Learning to Fly is my favorite but this is a close second! Thank you.

What a story and what a song! Don't Come Around Here feels completely different from any song before or since. I remember being mesmerized by that video when I was a kid. Such a great and timeless song and the back story adds so much to it. Tom Petty, Dave Stewart and Stevie Nicks...so much talent involved in making that song. Thanks again for another great video, Adam!

One of my first favorite songs when I was a kid. Played it over and over. Tom Petty was a genius that is sorely missed.

A top 3 favorite concert experience for me was seeing Tom in the early 2000’s. He opened the lid to the big trunk with a bright light shining out of it and removed the top hot as the sitar began to play the opening riff.. It was perfect. Thanks for the story behind the song.

Tom Petty sang about what a lot of young men were feeling at the time. He was strong and vulnerable at the same time. We all aspired to be more like him.

There's a story that deserves exploration—the influences of growing up in Florida on prominent musicians, such as Tom Petty, Jim Morrison, Ronnie Van Zant, Duane and Gregg Allman, Ray Charles and many others.
