Being a Moroccan, a country that breathes Tichumaren, Folk, Gnawa and Fusion, seeing Tinariwen on KEXP is a very pleasing thing ! Awesome band.

"(...) The musicians joined together in a collective (now known as Tinariwen) in order to create songs about the issues facing the Tuareg people, built a makeshift studio, and vowed to record music for free for anyone who supplied a blank cassette tape. The resulting homemade cassettes were traded widely throughout the Sahara region." ~ wikipedia

"the song is about someone who goes out into the desert until night" -- living in a desert on the other side of the world and not understanding a word of the lyrics, it absolutely makes sense. The constant droning heat, harsh dry air, and beat of lengthy transport across wide meandering stretches of arid land are captured in a sound that nearly paralells the beauty of the enviornment it's written about.

Fair play to KEXP. They get the creme da la creme to do live sets. Love tinariwen. Fantastic.

This group came into my radar a few years back and I absolutely love their stripped down spacious sound.  It's hypnotic, haunting, and they can really jam.  One can also hear the power in their lyrics and this is another fine example of how music is truly a universal language.  I came across the show in Seattle too late to make it but hoping I can catch them live someday.

I feel my inner african when I hear this. Its like the original blues music man. My Moroccan teacher always bragged about how the root of american music is actually from the Gnawa and a lot of traditional Berber and Sahel music.

I like how they rotate instruments and vocal duties, a true band.

Listening to music sung in an original language of man is quite relaxing.  The melodies and rhythmic tones has a calming effect on the brain.
