I used to have an eating disorder in high school for a few years and I'd barely be able to eat or sleep. I weighed 90 pounds at 16 and even the thought of eating a few bites of anything would make me sick. I couldn't deal with being so sick and tired and eventually with time I got over it.

I think the key to keeping muscle on during a fast is to still also be applying a muscle stimulus to require the body to keep that muscle

I did intermittent fasting and my clarity was really good, I think its just how long your fast is and the activity you do while youre in it

I’ve done a 21 day water fast, with occasional pickle gulp a pickle juice, I felt great, mental clarity was great, energy was great. I also didn’t work out or do any extra activity, I wanted to keep muscle breakdown to a low and I figured that if I didn’t have any micro tears in muscle fiber that my muscles would not be a quick access point for my body to get energy from, it worked well for me. I think for Beast, he was maybe a little too active with his job. I lost over 30 pounds with that fast and a lot of body fat. Muscle tone was still good.

I do 5 day fasts once a year, water and electrolyte only for the first 72 hours and then bone broth for the next 48 hours. It's actually a lot easier than you think from a hunger standpoint. It is super taxing, though. You get zero energy, move slow, feel cold, and you start to think in a fog. I cannot even fathom what 10-14 days would be like.

Well okay I shall explain.
First of all. Don't do extended fasting just cause of some "clarity"
It's not the same for every body. It depends on your condition.
But his case I'm very certain was what we call "keto flu" due to electrolyte imbalance. If you only drink plain water, you will eventually reach electrolyte imbalance.
Not every tap water in the world has enough electrolytes to be sufficient.

So he really should have added salts or sugar-free electrolyte supplements to his water.

This is the most common issue people face when doing this. The lack of electrolytes leading to fatigue.
A human body with enough fat reserves can easily work fine once it goes into ketosis. You will absolutely lose muscle, it will break down. That's just how it is.

But you can absolutely reduce the amount of muscle breakdown. You can still continue to take protein during ketosis. I'm not sure where this misconception comes that it would but Gluconeogensis, the process of creating glucose from non-carbohydrate sources like f.e protein occurs regardless.

Just focus on proper protein supplement.

Additionally and properly more important you can take exogenous ketone supplements to preserve muscle during ketosis. It should in theory also elevate your blood ketone levels and enhance the process compared to just getting into ketosis by fasting.


Don't get this wrong you will face some sort of fatigue especially in the beginning cause your body is adapting. But it will adapt.

I'm actually surprised this was not clear from his research because if done correctly, learning about electrolyte imbalance is fairly easily to stumble upon.

SAME + truth! I fasted for a month. But I ate very little only once a day, 10 days no food only water and lost 25+ pounds. Felt good and believe it or not I had energy when I did not eat. FAT is your fuel (energy). Today I’m a healthy 180 pounds than 220-230 (even tho I was bulkier and stronger).
