i feel like if you sidechain, it loses overall punch. What i like to do in Ableton is adjust the playhead of the 808 in a simpler instrument, change to one-shot mode and adjust the attack of the sample. Then I open up 2 eq's respectively. I cut about 120Hz for the 808, then boost the same band for the kick, effectively slotting the kick into the 808 so they become my "low end" buss. Then I group both elements then compress that group w/ drum buss for the punch.

u can reverse the polarity of the kick, also u can pitch the kick down in the piano roll a couple notes until it hits harder

When an 808 has that bump in the beginning you don’t always need a kick, if you do you can slide the kick forward or back or you can do that with your 808 so the transient doesn’t hit at the Same time

You could always just cut the initial transient off of the 808 or adjust the attack if its a synth/vst...for free lol
Edit: You could also manually just shift either 808 or kick in the timeline a few ticks to avoid the overlap of transients.
And for anyone that is going to come and say a plugin is better, you are wrong or lazy, just stop, you dont know what you are talking about lol this is not sidechaining the bass to avoid masking, it is about peak avoidance.

u can rise the attack of the 808 or sidechain with whatever other compressor if u dont have the soothe plugin

only thing u should use to sidechain a kick to a 808 is a ring mod sidechain, free plugin for this is "RMSC" and it does a sample perfect sidechain that also gives pleasurable distortion effect if u overdo it, u should never use multiband or anything close to soothe to sidechain because this method will never punch as hard as the kick and 808 into a soft clipper method everyone uses
