Dr. No is de eerste James Bondfilm die geproduceerd is door EON Productions. De film is gebaseerd op het boek Dr. No van Ian Fleming. De film werd uitgebracht in 1962 en geproduceerd door Albert R. Broccoli en Harry Saltzman. De film kwam uit tijdens de Cubacrisis President John F. Kennedy zou over de film gezegd hebben: I wish I had James Bond on my staff. Dit leidde er mede toe dat de film een groot succes werd.
Sean Connery speelde James Bond en Ursula Andress was de Bondgirl. De titel verwijst naar de schurk in het verhaal, die in de film wordt gespeeld door Joseph Wiseman. In Nederland werd de film op 31 januari 1963 uitgebracht onder de naam: James Bond 007 contra dr. No. Bondsound.
Het overbekende James Bond Theme uit Dr. No (1962) is gedeeltelijk van zijn hand. Toen de producenten van Dr. No de melodie hoorden die componist Monty Norman voor het begin van de film componeerde, waren zij allerminst tevreden. Ze schakelden John Barry in die in een noodtempo een nieuwe melodie moest componeren. Norman hielp hem hier een handje bij, door hem een deuntje te overhandigen dat hij ooit heeft geschreven voor een musical, maar dat nooit werd gebruikt. Barry verwijderde de zangpartij en verving deze door een geheel instrumentale versie, met als resultaat het 'James Bond Theme'. Barry kreeg hier echter een zeer bescheiden bijdrage voor. Toen hij, op eigen kosten, de film in de bioscoop bezocht, schrok hij zich rot - het thema dat hij voor een appel en ei had gecomponeerd kwam keer op keer terug! De producenten van de Bondfilms hebben het ruimschoots goed met hem gemaakt. In totaal heeft hij voor elf Bondfilms de muziek mogen schrijven.
Overigens staat Norman wegens contractuele verplichtingen nog steeds te boek als componist van het James Bond Theme.

The well-known James Bond Theme from Dr. No (1962) is partly written by him. When Dr. When they heard the melody that composer Monty Norman composed before the beginning of the film, they were not at all satisfied. They engaged John Barry who had to compose a new melody in an emergency tempo. Norman gave him a helping hand, by handing him a tune he once wrote for a musical, but which was never used. Barry removed the vocals and replaced it with an entirely instrumental version, resulting in the 'James Bond Theme'. However, Barry received a very modest contribution for this. When, at his own expense, he saw the film in the cinema, he was shocked - the theme he had composed for an apple and egg came back again and again! The producers of the Bond films have made amply well with him. In total he was allowed to write the music for eleven Bond films.

Norman is still known as a composer of the James Bond Theme due to contractual obligations.
