Qualitative analysis of nitrate ions | The Real Chemist

Today we are going to analyze a solution containing nitrate ions

We need Sodium hydroxide
Pieces of Aluminum foil and red litmus paper

now to a boiling tube add 1 cm depth of nitrate ion solution
then add the same amount of sodium hydroxide

then heat the mixture until the solution starts to boil slightly

now to the hot solution add Aluminum foil

you will see effervescence due to ammonia gas

you must confirm ammonia gas using a damp red litmus

red litmus turns blue as ammonia is a base
