The Funan Techo canal project is attracting a lot of attention from academics and international media. The 180km long canal will help connect the capital Phnom Penh with Cambodia's ports on the Gulf of Thailand. Funan Techo canal is a major project with many important impacts on Vietnam. A thorough assessment of the potential impacts and close cooperation with Cambodia are essential to ensure the project brings maximum benefits to both countries. In addition, Vietnam also needs to continue to promote environmental protection measures in the Mekong Delta, respond to climate change and ensure water security to adapt to the changes brought by this project.

Cambodia's development within its own borders is a sovereign right and should not require justification to other nations. Vietnam's concerns about the Funan Canal likely stem from potential shifts in regional trade dynamics once the canal becomes operational.

Congratulations, Cambodia will now be able to control its waterways independently.

The OC-EO canal of Funan (Phnom) Kingdom of Cambodia has been already existing since the first century throughout the OC-EO seaport in Kampuchea Krom (South Vietnam)

Vietnam invaded and occupied Champa, Kampuchea Krom (South Vietnam) of Cambodia and the Sihanouk trail that helped transporting food, medical and war equipment from Cambodia to the Viet soldiers hiding along the border fighting against the US during the Vietnam war, Vietnam never complained.

Return Kampuchea Krom to Cambodia and we will have no need to build the canal. Deal?

I'd have like to see Cambodia fund the canal project themselves. But that would be unlikely. And let's be clear, the Vietnamese government isn't going to foot the bill; they were happy to charge Cambodia for using their waterways. The Vietnamese government is looking out only for their interest, NOT DOUBT. It was sort of a monopoly, no choice for Cambodia really. So, Cambodia have been dependent on the Vietnamese waterways up to this point. Remember, the canal is in Cambodia territory, not like it's in the Vietnamese territory. Cambodia too has the right to lookout for their interest. The canal will benefit Cambodia's development. But...

All Vietnam interest and exploitation over Cambodia will be gone with the operation of this new canal.
It’ll also keep Vietnam in check. Among other countries like japan, and South Korea, China had built bridges and highways etc for Cambodia. China also built state-of the- art railroad for Laos. It’s a win-win situation for all. Make love not war.

No one complained when Khmer built Angkowat.

The canal has been invested by Cambodian investors more than half of the total shares.

00 impact to Vietnam environment and 00 water losses. Both Cambodia and Vietnam lost water levels due to upstream hydropower dams in Lao, Thailand and China.

The reason Vietnam worries because they lost income from Cambodia shipping pass through.
They see China and Cambodia are close relationships, unlike Vietnam, which created enemies surrounding themselves.

China involvements in building infrastructure around the world are simply a strategy to make friends it's a win, win situation and most importantly to improve China rise on the world stage with the U.S. the China Cambodia Funan canal is to facilitate the export of Cambodian products and is not a threat to vietnam. not to mention China building a railway north and south connecting hanoi and ho chi minh. learn the Chinese chess and you understand the logic.

When the Vietnamese built a Canal or illegally invaded the Mekong Delta in Cambodia through immigration, the Vietnamese didn't say a single thing.

When Cambodia helped Vietnam against China and we lost our land to the hypocritical Vietnamese king, there was no even a thank you, on top of that the Vietnamese even dared to steal our land.

When Cambodia helped Vietnam to unite against the French and North, South Vietnam, there wasn't even a thank you.

When Vietnam created the Khmer rouge and killed million of Cambodians, invaded Cambodia, and stayed for 10 years in the name of a false savior who was actually an oppressor, the Vietnamese wanted Cambodia to say thank you.

Each and every country think of way to save their country money... You and i would do the same concept... The concanel is build on cambodia land not in Vietnam land.... At the end of the day each country will do for their country...

Just because the Chinese navy can "park" near Cambodia is a "concern"???

China does not and has never invaded or started any war with any country unless being invaded, and does not need Cambodia port to "invade" Vietnam.

Remember the "lesson" almost 50 years ago? Hope Vietnam has learned from it
