How To Hit A Tennis One-Handed Backhand In 6 Steps

That allows you to learn each chunk of the one-handed backhand technique much better and as you finally connect them all together your backhand will flow much smoother.

Here's a brief overview of the whole process where the first step is finding the right grip and the rest are 5 key positions of the whole one-handed backhand tennis stroke.

1. The Grip - we'll use a very simple method for finding the right grip without any thinking about bevels.

2. The Unit Turn - there are 3 checkpoints in the unit turn alone that help you get into the right position before you even start moving your feet.

3. The Backswing - there is not much of a backswing in the one-handed backhand but it's important that most of the work is done with your non-dominant arm.

4. The Uncoiling - most players miss the key wrist and racket head position in the uncoiling phase and lose on power so make sure you get this one right.

5. The Contact - we'll look at 3 key checkpoints of the contact phase and what is the role of the wrist.

6. The Follow-Through - The pros like Wawrinka often times hit a follow-through in a way that deceives your eye and we'll make sure you're clear on the correct follow-through position.

Learning how to hit a one-handed backhand tennis stroke is hopefully now a much easier process for you but do keep in mind that changing technique takes time.

And if you're a tennis beginner who hasn't been learning the one-handed backhand technique at all and you're starting from scratch then stay tuned as I will also post some simple backhand progressions for tennis beginners.

The tip about pulling apart the racquet is the first time I've ever heard it. I always just had the hitting arm completely relaxed. Can't wait to try it. Super informative video.

Thank you coach for this lesson!
For me, the guide on grip (finger gaps+diagonal) and not locking my elbow has already improved my backhand significantly.

Outstanding analysis. I loved his comments about prestretching the hitting arm and how to prevent over rotation by extending the non-dominant arm backwards.

Thanks to your videos, I made the 1HBH work. Oddly it worked so well that I realized I used all wrist and "brushing" on my forehand. The solid contact through the ball as well as the vibration and sound of solid contact with the addition of topspin of a correct 1HBH grossly pointed out the inadequacies of my forehand. Forehand is still being fixed.

Tomaž, thank you so much for this video. I've seen so many other videos on the OHBH and still felt lost. This video cleared everything up and today I was hitting shots that felt like I shouldn't have been able to hit.

Thank you so much! This video has been absolutely life changing

Good detail on Stan W's apparent body rotation. I admire his BH but have been working to eliminate inadvertent sidespin on my own ball.
