I'm sure Patrick would also tell top level boys that the very short cross angle is a relatively rare shot. For the most part, top boys and pros aim for very large targets. A soft hand feed like these is one thing, trying to hit that angle on an actual match play ball is quite another. This would be a relatively rarely used shot when given a perfect short ball. The boys who aim for larger targets with less angle consistently win matches. Seen so many juniors hit these amazing 'hero balls' in practice, but then go into a match and get stomped due to way too many unforced errors.

Ok, so if you stand a bit inside the court you take away time from your opponent and you get him in trouble. But if he returns deep then you get yourself in trouble because you are standing a bit inside the court? Started playing tennis 6 months ago so I may have no idea what I am talking about 😄

.. but hitting 'hand-fed' balls is not the same as receiving a return from a practice partner on the baseline.

This is entirely inappropriate for a kid of his playing level.
