I had to read it in 1971 or thereabouts. I thought it was a depressing nightmare of a story, and never forgot the suicide attempt by sledding into a tree. All the books I had to read for school were godless, dark, miserable and dreary. The other horrible best selling classic I hated was The Grapes Of Wrath. I remember a young mother lost her baby and she ended up nursing a dying old man in a barn!!! Not a good story for a teenaged girl.
