Thanks for the summary but I will not accept slander on Zeena. She has every right to complain about her illness. All the nasty things about her appearance are mainly due to her illness. She may not like Mattie but she does have a legit reason for wanting her out: she needs real help that Mattie isn't providing. Zeena complains about her living situation because she's trapped there by her marriage to Ethan (who also wants to move btw they just don't want to move to the same type of place) just as Ethan is trapped in an unfavourable situation by the marriage. They're a terrible match for each other and Ethan should never have proposed to her but Ethan is painted more sympathetically because obviously the reader is shown much more of his personality and desires (whereas Zeena is just sick and mean).

Regardless, I'm going to root for the sick woman who is justifiably looking out for her health over her husband who cares more about his side hoe than about the woman he swore to God and the government to have and to hold in sickness and in health. (he literally fantasises about taking care of Mattie when she's ill)

This book is a tough nut to Crack. Although I enjoyed the writing and description of the landscapes, and I felt for the characters, I felt it hard to figure out what was going on exactly, the ending in particular confused me ? Is mattie now disabled after the accident and did ethan die ?
